New Contemporaries welcomes submissions for the 2022 programme from emerging and early career artists who are final-year students, recent graduates and postgraduate students from UK art schools and alternative learning programmes.
The selectors for 2022 are internationally-renowned artists James Richards, Veronica Ryan and Zadie Xa.
Being selected for the 2022 programme includes:
–Exhibiting as part of Bloomberg New Contemporaries 2022 at Ferens Art Gallery and Humber Street Gallery, Hull, and South London Gallery.
–Participating in New Contemporaries Bridget Riley Artists’ Development Programme.
–Contributing to New Contemporaries digital programme of blogs, vlogs, workshops, events and the opportunity to present work on NC's online channels.
–Being eligible, as NC alumni, for studio bursaries, residencies, scholarships and other opportunities.
As an organisation that continues to evolve, the selection of artists for New Contemporaries 2022 programme will no longer be an anonymous process. In the context of increasingly nuanced and sophisticated works and the fluidity of how their makers identify, New Contemporaries recognises the importance of knowing the artist behind the work, ensuring a diversity of voices represented. From this year, selectors will have access to some biographical information about the artist.
New Contemporaries is committed to inclusion and equal opportunities and encourages submissions from artists of all backgrounds, ages, genders, socio- economic backgrounds, ethnicities, religions, sexual orientations, and from those who identify as having disabilities.
Since 1949 New Contemporaries has played a vital role in the UK’s contemporary art scene, with a wealth of established artists participating including post-war figures Frank Auerbach, Bruce Lacey and Paula Rego; pop artists Frank Bowling, Patrick Caulfield and David Hockney; new media pioneers Stuart Brisley, Helen Chadwick and Derek Jarman; YBAs Damien Hirst, Chris Ofili and Gillian Wearing; alongside contemporary figures such as Tacita Dean, Sunil Gupta, Mark Leckey and Mona Hatoum. In the new millennium exceptional artists including Monster Chetwynd, Rachel Maclean, Haroon Mirza, Hardeep Pandhal, Laure Prouvost and Lynette Yiadom-Boakye and more recently a new generation including Hardeep Pandhal, Joanna Piotrowska, Shen Xin and Imran Perretta have all been part of New Contemporaries.
