A CLOSER FUTURE

FIRST FESTIVAL OF MEXICAN SCI-FI MOVIES

A CLOSER FUTURE is a multidisciplinary project aimed at rescuing the history of Mexican sci-fi cinema. It involves restoring and screening six selected films, a four day international seminar on the Mexican imaginary view of the future, and two exhibitions by Carolina Kerlow and Maurycy Gomulicki. This project is coordinated by the Sala de Arte Público Siqueiros.

Over 30 films with sci-fi topics were produced in Mexico from the 1950s to the 1980s. Amongst them, popular comedians and wrestling heroes, like El Santo, travel to unknown worlds or fight against aliens and mad scientists; in other cases, export-only copies feature sensually clad female space invaders ridding their tacky garments. Even though they were box office hits, these films have rarely returned to the wide screen after their first commercial run. Disregarded due to their low budgets, weird plots, and lack of artistic pretensions, many of these movies and their memorabilia were lost or destroyed. A CLOSER FUTURE is the first scholarly approach to Mexican sci-fi production involving interviews conducted with actors, directors and producers who participated in/or with the works as well as a thorough two-year research history made in public and private archives.

In addition to six days of screenings and seminars, the projects closing ceremony will include an ambitious list of selected Mexico City musicians, who when disassembling and reinterpreting original soundtrack clips, encounter psychotronic elements of a close, yet distant past.
