The exhibition:

Invited by the aforementioned artistic directors and international curators, 44 contemporary artists coming from Europe, Africa, Asia, South and North America, have been asked to abandon their customary media, in order to make works in ceramics in collaboration with 14 local manufactures in this area of the Ligurian Riviera, and in some cases with local schools such as the High School of Art and the Music Conservatory of Savona. The Biennale is thus meant as a work-in-progress lasting 2 years, during which all the invited artists do follow one another in the ceramics factories. The result of this collaboration will be presented at the Attese: Biennale of Ceramics in Contemporary Art (2nd edition).

Special projects:

Various will be the special projects involving the artists, curators and art-historians in this territory such as:

The garden of Asger Jorns house in Albisola

The Biennale has commissioned an extensive photographic documentation of this spectacular example of Spontaneous Architecture that will be presented for the first time at the Biennale.

Small ceramics by Arturo Martini

An ample selection of small ceramics made in Albisola between 1927 and 1930 by Arturo Martini the most important Italian Sculptor of the first half of the 20th Century. Two years prior to his death he wrote a radical pamphlet titled “Sculpture, a Dead Language”

During the vernissage, music for ceramics will be played outdoor. The performances will involve pianists, composers, visual artists and opera-singers

A bus-service from/to the main exhibition-venues will be provided

The History of the Biennale

Inspiration of this Biennale lies in the 20th century avant-garde tradition that, in its most significant phases, found an outlet for expression in this area of Western Liguria well known for its long-established ceramics manufacture and where this exhibition is mainly taking place. Departing from the numerous noteworthy traces left in the region and amongst the local ceramics firms by artists such as Asger Jorn, Lucio Fontana, Wifredo Lam, Piero Manzoni and Pinot Gallizio, the objective of the Attese: Biennale of Ceramics in Contemporary Art is that of once again bringing contemporary artists, curators, art historians and critics with established international reputations into contact with this local and multicultural tradition and to develop a process of reciprocal metamorphosis.
