The Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen is one of the most important
cultural organizations in the city of Rotterdam. It has a broad and
world-renowned collection. Boijmans Van Beuningen is a multifaceted yet distinctive
museum aimed at a wide audience.
Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen is now entering a new phase. In
mid-May of this year, the expansion of the museum with a section of about 9,000
square meters will be completed, and large parts of the museum have
recently been renovated. The most important challenge for the Artistic
Director and his staff is to develop an ambitious exhibition program and
strengthen the ties with residents, local organizations, the business
community and local government. The dual aim is to draw more visitors
from Rotterdam and its surrounding area, and to further raise the
museum’s national and international profile. Among other things, Artistic
Director will pay particular attention to the applied arts, which are gaining in
importance in the Netherlands.
The museum is looking for a new ARTISTIC DIRECTOR
As the new Artistic Director of the museum you will concentrate
on strengthening the museum’s policies on exhibition, collection and
acquisition – after a period in which the expansion and renovation
of the museum building have taken center stage. Given the enormous importance
of the museum for the residents of Rotterdam, you will also help forge
closer links with the local community. In addition, you will raise the
museum’s national and international profile. In doing do, you will give top
priority to strengthening ties with (potential) visitors through
marketing, education and information provision. In addition, you have
the drive and ability to attract new sponsors. You also have a keen interest
in other cultural organizations in Rotterdam and will actively champion
the common interests of the local cultural sector. You are prepared to
move to Rotterdam or its surrounding area in the near future.
The new Artistic Director:
- Is preferably an art historian specializing in one or more areas
covered by the museum’s collection
- Has work experience in large and complex cultural organizations
– preferably in museums or cultural heritage organizations
- Is an accomplished communicator capable of projecting the desired
image among a wide and diverse audience in speech and writing
- Is familiar with the latest communication and presentation techniques
The new Artistic Director:
- Has built up an effective international network in the world of
museums and the visual arts
- Commands wide respect in the world of the visual arts or design and is
able to carve out a influential, high-profile role for himself
- Maintains close relations with the world of science, universities,
cultural advisory councils and funds subsidizing art.
Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen is a Department of the City of Rotterdam.
Rotterdam’s City Executive intends to turn the museum into an
independent foundation. That procedure has not yet been set in motion.
The museum is currently run by a two-member management team. The two
Directors are jointly responsible for the museum’s performance.
One of them serves as General Manager. Four departments fall under the
management team, namely Collection, Presentation, PR & Marketing and Support
Services. The Artistic Director is primary responsible for the
Collection and Presentation departments.
The appointment will be made by the Rotterdam City Executive. During the
selection procedure, the City Executive will receive advice from an
Advisory Committee, headed by Mr. J.N.A. van Caldenborgh, Chairman of
the Boijmans Van Beuningen Foundation. The other Committee members are Prof.
M. Halbertsma (Professor of the History of Art and Culture at Erasmus
University), Prof. R. de Leeuw (Director of the Rijksmuseum) and Drs.
G.A. van Tuyl (Director of the Kunstmuseum Wolfsburg). The list of candidates
to be submitted to the Executive will be compiled by a selection
committee chaired by the Rotterdam Alderman for Art & Cultural Affairs.
