Open a kitchen drawer in any home, and they will spring out at you like a jack-in-the-box. Go to any beauty spot, and you are sure to encounter a few, trapped among the plants like giant insects or flapping noisily in the wind.

Floating in the local river or blocking your nearest storm drain, plastic carrier bags are an unsightly and environmentally degrading fact of modern life.

(Charles Arthur / independent.co.uk)

Every time we purchase something, a store clerk puts it into a handy shopping bag. What a wonderful amenity! Technology has come a long way to give us such a convenience for nothing. For nothing?

We shop, therefore we are.

How can we learn to be accountable for our own actions? Would we, as artists, as designers, as shoppers change our habits if we had to pay for the social consequences of our own doing?

Goods for Goods:
Brigata Bag Exchange

There are billions of shopping bags in use today, some global, some local. Each one has a character we may feel is suited to our own. Think of shopping bags as a reflection of our own self.

Brigata Italia is collecting shopping bags from all around the world, a selection of which will later be reproduced in a nifty publication. Send us a shopping bag, any ordinary plastic bag, and in return we will reward you with our very own Brigata Bag.

This is far as we went with the BAG idea. We are not even sure what we will do with the actual bags, but you have our promise that they will NEVER be disposed of. If you have any comments, suggestions or related information we would be happy to hear from you.

Diller + Scofidio is one of the most representative contemporary radical architect studios and Thom Mayne of Morphosis, may very well be the most prominent architect practicing in California.
