Assume Vivid Astro Focus, a.k.a. Eli Sudbrack:
peres projects is pleased to present the West Coast premiere of Assume Vivid Astro Focus, a.k.a. Eli Sudbrack with an installation of new works by the New York based, Brazilian artist.
Sudbrack will present the world premiere of his new Walking on Thin Ice (done in collaboration with Brooklyn-based video group Honeygun Labs and remixed by Action Daddy), based on the song of the same title originally released by Yoko Ono in 1981 along with a 14 foot floor sticker entitled Sick Bionic Woman and a new wall paper based on Renaissance era Unicorn tapestries like the ones found at the Musée du Moyen Age, Cluny, Paris. New photographs, wall drawings, t-shirts, stickers and other recent works will also be presented in an installation that is sure to overwhelm all of our senses.
By defying more traditional ethical concerns of appropriation and authorship, Sudbrack revels in the power of the found image and the computer age futility of copyright, while exploiting the music of our own personal nostalgia. His work has been influenced by diverse artistic and cultural tendencies including unicorn and Bauhaus tapestries, Chinese and Japanese designs from kimonos and pottery, Francis Picabia, Tibetan paintings, coloring books, Peter Max, graffiti, etc. The result is often a defiant reclamation of the lost splendor in the banal and a boyish enthusiasm towards the true beauty in the world around us.
Sudbracks work has recently been seen in important New York venues for young artists including White Columns, Apex Art, Daniel Reich, John Connelly Presents, and Bellwether Gallery which has resulted in reviews in publications. His work has recently been shown at New Yorks New Museum and later this year will also be seen at the Centre National d’art et de Culture Georges Pompidou in Paris. Sudbrack is a 2002 Rema Hort Mann Foundation Grant recipient.
