Bar Laika presents Satellite 15: Dynoman, Bergsonist and Zariiina
Thursday, December 9, 2021, 8:30pm
Join us as we return to Bar Laika for the fifteenth edition of the live music series Satellite. This will be our first show since our COVID closure. We are excited to relaunch with the album release event for Journeys by Dynoman. This show will feature Dynoman’s first live performance in the US followed by DJ sets from friends Bergsonist and Zariina.
Dynoman (Haamid Rahim) is a music producer and DJ based in Brooklyn originally from Karachi. He helped develop the electronic music scene in Karachi by co-founding the platform Forever South (FXS) in 2012. FXS organized events and released a few albums such as Dynoman’s debut album Naubahar, and the FXS Collections Volumes series 1–4. He also helped organize The Karachi Files–a project that brought musicians from Pakistan, the Maldives, and Germany together in Karachi to convert a house into a recording studio and produce a collaborative double-sided LP. After relocating to Brooklyn, Dynoman founded his own music platform, Rare Frequency Transmissions, and now hosts the radio show Ascending on Half Moon. Dynoman’s music is energetic, hypnotic, percussive, and rhythmic. It often employs South Asian instrumentation and grooves inspired by his origins. Always evolving as an artist, his sound continues to be a reaction to everything he experiences.
Bergsonist (Selwa Abd) is a New York-based artist and musician originally from Morocco. Under the guise of Bergsonist, she uses a variety of media to investigate social resonance through divergent conceptual aesthetics (minimalism and musique concrète to name a few). Through her work, she explores notions of identity, memory, and social politics. She is the founder of the community resource Pick Up The Flow (PUTF) as well as co-founder of the music collective and multi-disciplinary project 3afak with Sanna Almajedi. She hosts a monthly music show on NTS Radio and a podcast featuring inspiring creatives from the PUTF community and beyond.
Zariiina (Sarah Zarina Hakani) is a Brooklyn-based DJ, educator, and multidisciplinary artist originally from Atlanta. Her sound mirrors the theme of her name, delegation, and memory. “Zarina” was the name assigned to her grandmother when she got married at seventeen, and became Sarah’s middle name when she herself turned seventeen. Through her creative practice, Zariiina challenges notions of transmission across generations, ancestors, and sonic spaces, weaving her history (ranging from growing up in Atlanta to inheriting her grandfather’s Hindi cassettes) to her soundscapes. Currently, she is embarking on related research on memory transmission in a creative technology grad program at NYU and as the artist-in-residence at The People’s Forum. She is a cofounder of Reconstructed, a creative publication that shares narratives of queer, Black, and Shi’a Muslims, complicating linear understandings of what it looks like to hold closeness to Islam.
