The Armory Show 2002 – The International Fair of New Art will take place February 21-25, 2002, on Piers 88 and 90. Once again, the fair will coincide with the Art Dealers Association of America (ADAA) Art Show to create the most exciting and important annual art weekend in the Americas.
New York is home to more collectors, curators, galleries, critics and artists than any other city in the world. Next February, they will be joined by many thousands of their peers from around the globe making New York the true center of the international art world.
Interest in The Armory Show continues to grow, confirming its position at the forefront of the art world. Over 600 galleries have requested applications for some 150 spots. Given such demand, The Armory Show will continue its commitment to present galleries that show new work by living artists. The deadline for applications is August 31, 2001.
Exhibited artworks in the 2002 show will include painting, sculpture, drawings, multiples, editions, works on paper, photography, installations, and video. At the 2001 fair, attendance more than doubled to over 20,000. Some 170 galleries from twenty countries exhibited. The Armory Show 2002 promises to be even more successful.
New to the fair for 2002 will be a special section created to showcase editions. In the previous two Armory Shows, more and more multiples were exhibited and in an ever expanding array of media. Besides traditional etchings, lithographs and silkscreens, artists are embracing new technology to produce editions including digital photography, video, DVD and even neon. Moreover, museums and collectors are paying greater attention to contemporary art produced in editions. Some 40 publishers have been invited to submit applications; 20 will be accepted into the fair.
An opening night preview gala will take place on Thursday, February 21, 2001, to benefit the Museum of Modern Art in New York. At the 2001 fair, over 1,100 tickets were purchased for the gala, which raised over $355,000.00.
