In her catalog essay for Painting at the Edge of the World, currently on view at the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis, Midori Matsui describes Hiroshi Sugitos in-betweenness as the interplay between figurative enunciation and formal structure that repeatedly creates this anxious but strangely beautiful state.
