CCA Islands offers CCA Islands Travel Scholarship for emerging artists, curators, architects, designers and those who aim to be a professional in various areas of contemporary art and culture, pursuing their research and creative activities in Japan.
The scholarship offers research expenses of JPY 200,000 and covers one return transportation fare according to CCA Islands terms and conditions. Preference will be given to applicants under 35 years of age. The recipients are expected to stay in Japan, and the minimum length of stay is four weeks and eight weeks at the maximum between September 1, 2022 and March 31, 2023. In the end of their stay, the recipients are required to report the result of their research.
The schedule of the scholarship is subject to change due to the government’s Covid measures.
Application requirements
–Curator: Work experience in contemporary art or majored in art/art history.
–Architect/Designer: Work experience by running a private office or being engaged in equivalent activities.
–Artist: No specific requirements.
All up to age 35.

Curators/Historians/Researchers: Cover letter summarizing your recent professional work mainly on art exhibitions, publication and art projects, not in excess of 500 words
Artist/Designer/Architects: The image of your works, for five works in minimum, and ten works in maximum, including the caption, description, title, year, materials, project description. Please do not submit more than ten images. For time-based media, such as film, video, and sound, please submit no more than five minutes of material (not five min for each file, the total duration of all your works must be five min)
Result announcement
The result will be announced in June 2022.
CCA Islands is launched by CCA, Center for Contemporary Art and Peace Winds Japan (PWJ) in April 2022, as a new art platform based on the venues of three islands in Japan—Toyoshima (Seto), Ishigaki and Amami. Standing on the concept: “Art supports artists and saves lives”, the project brings together contemporary art and humanitarian assistance to create new synergies. CCA Islands aims to develop art projects that extend the framework for the presentation of art, with new ways of working. The program is associated with humanitarian support, working as an initiative towards environmental protection and enrichment of island culture. Activities will include artworks and publications derived from research, supported by lectures, conferences and workshops. CCA Islands offers the CCA Travel Scholarship to emerging artists, curators, architects, designers, and aspiring professionals in various areas of contemporary art and culture.
Peace Winds Japan—established in 1996, an international NGO Peace Winds Japan provides humanitarian assistance in conflict and disaster-affected areas in over 34 countries, mainly focusing on the areas of Asia, Africa and the Middle East. PWJ is engaged in cultural and educational activities, which are pressing issues needing support in many parts of the world. PWJ is also active in animal welfare and dog rescue.
CCA—Center for Contemporary Art, CCA is a research institution for contemporary art, founded in Kitakyushu in 1997. Since then, CCA has been presenting art exhibitions and projects together with internationally renowned artists and practitioners from various fields such as architecture and science. CCA ran a studio and fellowship program for emerging artists, curators, and aspiring professionals in the art world.
