Assistant Teaching Professor/LPSOE Graphic and Visual Communication Design. The Department of Visual Arts within the School of Arts and Humanities at UC San Diego is committed to academic excellence and diversity within the faculty, staff, and student body. The Department invites applications for the position of Assistant Teaching Professor (formal title “Lecturer with Potential Security of Employment”) for a designer/ artist who engages critically and analytically with the practices and politics of graphic and visual communication design. This position will have a strong emphasis on teaching, along with pedagogical and/or disciplinary research.
We seek applicants who will excel at developing and teaching courses in Graphic and Visual Communication Design. The successful candidate will teach in the department’s undergraduate Speculative Design, ICAM, and Studio majors. We are especially interested in hearing from designers/ artists who have a willingness and demonstrated capacity to work in an interdisciplinary context that includes undergraduate majors in studio, digital art, film/video, art history, and media history and theory.
Teaching will encompass the entire curricular range, from large undergraduate lecture courses to intermediate production and technique courses, advanced undergraduate production and critique courses, and graduate courses for MFA and Ph.D. Art Practice students. Courses would include such topics as introduction to design systems, speculative design, design theory and history, typography, visual identity & branding, design for print & publication, information design, information visualization, information architecture, UI, UX design, creative coding and or advanced techniques in communication design.
The applicant’s creative portfolio should be conceptually rich and conversant with the contemporary and emerging discourses of Design. The applicant should demonstrate a knowledge of foundational software tools and techniques, critical design theory, and speculative project development. We are looking for a designer/ artist whose work will connect with the critical and expanded bridges between Design and Fine Arts as research disciplines. Successful appointees will have a track record of excellence in teaching, professional and/or scholarly achievement and activity, a commitment to university service, and a commitment to support diversity, equity, and inclusion at the university.
Rank and salary commensurate with qualifications and experience based on UC pay scales.
Basic qualifications (required at time of application)
Applicants must possess all but the dissertation of a PhD or MFA in Visual Art, Graphic Design, Design Communication, Media Arts, or related field.
Additional qualifications (required at time of start)
MFA or PhD (or equivalent) in Visual Art, Graphic Design, Design Communication, Media Arts, or related field required prior to the time of appointment.
Preferred qualifications:
–Teaching and academic experience at the undergraduate level.
–Professional recognition and/or distinguished scholarship.
–Trajectory for developing a national and international reputation.
–Research, teaching and service demonstrate their capacity to contribute to diversity and inclusion.
