The Department of Art and Art History in the UC Davis College of Letters and Science presents the fall quarter public lectures in Art Studio.

Jessica Segall: The California Studio

Jessica Segall is a multidisciplinary visual artist whose work is often sited in hostile and threatened landscapes. Her work was most recently at the Fries Museum, the Coreana Museum of Art and the Havana Biennial. She has attended residencies at MacDowell and Skowhegan. Segall is the fall quarter teaching artist-in-residence in The California Studio. Cosponsored by the Manetti Shrem Museum.

Xu Bing: The California Studio

Xu Bing is a visual artist internationally recognized for his experiments with written script in a wide variety of media. Xu has received the MacArthur Fellowship, Fukuoka Asian Culture Award, Artes Mundi Prize and the U.S. State Department Medal of Arts. From 2008 to 2014, Xu served as the vice president of the Central Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing, where he is now a professor and the director of the Academic Committee. Xu is the fall quarter spotlight artist-in-residence in The California Studio. Sponsored by UC Davis College of Letters and Science, UC Davis Global Affairs, and the UC Davis departments of Art and Art History, Cinema and Digital Media, East Asian Studies and East Asian Languages and Cultures.

Christina Quarles: Betty Jean and Wayne Thiebaud Endowed Lecture Series

Christina Quarles is a painter whose work questions assumptions and beliefs surrounding identity and the human figure. She has been subject of solo exhibitions at the Frye Art Museum and the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago. Quarles has participated in the Skowhegan School for Painting and Sculpture and has received the Pérez Art Museum Miami Prize and the Rema Hort Mann Foundation Emerging Artist Grant. Cosponsored by the Manetti Shrem Museum.

Tarrah Krajnak: Art Studio Visiting Artist Lecture Series

Tarrah Krajnak is a photo-based visual artist whose work explores forgotten landscapes, orphanhood, exile, race, origins and the ways these constructs are written on the body and in the archive. Her first monograph El Jardín De Senderos Que Se Bifurcan was shortlisted for the Aperture/Paris Photo Book Award and listed in The Museum of Modern Art’s inaugural list of the top 10 photo books of 2021. Supported by the UC Davis College of Letters and Science. Cosponsored by the Manetti Shrem Museum.

Art Studio at UC Davis challenges students to cultivate curiosity and sustain the courage to embrace the unknown through art. Arts students at the undergraduate and graduate level are encouraged to explore a broad range of disciplines and to participate in opportunities outside the classroom, including the Art Studio Visiting Artist Lecture Series, the Betty Jean and Wayne Thiebaud Lecture Series, The California Studio: Manetti Shrem Artist Residencies, professional practice seminars, student exhibitions, competitions and internships.
