Han Schuil: SOLO

The solo exhibition by the Dutch artist Han Schuil will be on display in Landhuis Oud Amelisweerd from September 2 to November 12, 2023. Schuil will use the historical chambers of the country manor to exhibit paintings from the past twenty years.

Han Schuil (Voorschoten, 1958) has managed to build up a consistent and, above all, idiosyncratic oeuvre over the past forty years. He was one of the artists who ensured a strong revival of painting in the Netherlands from the 1980s onwards, yet he cannot be linked to any group or movement, neither from a locality nor because of a common painterly viewpoint. In a sense, Schuil does not fit in anywhere, and that is precisely what makes him and his work so special. His works are very recognisable, even though one work may look robust and another very delicate. 

At first sight, his oeuvre shows a struggle with abstraction, but on closer inspection, his work turns out to be rich in references to, or rather derivatives of, reality. Whether it is speakers, cartoon drawings (such as the eyes in the 2003-2008 series Untitled, which are a curious combination of manga and Disney), MRI scans or infrared heat photographs (in the HEAT series), reality (or the reality we think we know) is never far away.

Centraal Museum at Landhuis Oud Amelisweerd
From 2022 to 2026, the Centraal Museum is taking up residence at Oud Amelisweerd. From spring to autumn for the next five years, this beautiful country estate will form the backdrop for a solo exhibition by a renowned Dutch contemporary artist. On the first floor of the mansion, the museum will give artists carte blanche to present works that interact with the historical interiors. Han Schuil is the fourth artist in this series of exhibitions.
