Foundwork is delighted to announce that artist Dominique White—based between Marseille, France and Essex, UK—has been awarded the 2022 Foundwork Artist Prize. Now in its fourth year, the prize will grant White an unrestricted 10,000 USD and studio visits with each of the five members of our 2022 jury.

In addition, Chris Zhongtian Yuan, Anna Perach, and Junghun Kim were named to Foundwork’s 2022 Short List. Our honoree and our three shortlisted artists will also each participate in long-form interviews as part of Foundwork’s ongoing Dialogues program.

Our 2022 prize jury included five esteemed curators, gallerists, and artists based in Los Angeles, New York, London, and Berlin: Edgar Arcenaux, Los-Angeles-based artist working in the fields of drawing, sculpture, installation, performance, and video. César García-Alvarez, Founding Executive & Artistic Director of The Mistake Room in Los Angeles. Lauren Kelly, Partner at Sean Kelly Gallery in New York. Eva Langret, Director of Frieze London. Javier Peres, Founder of Peres Projects, with locations in Berlin, Seoul, and Milan.

“The breadth of submissions for the Foundwork Prize was remarkable,” shares juror and Frieze London director Eva Langret. “We were struck by the diversity of proposals, the originality of ideas we encountered in the reviewing process, and the urgency, generosity, and care with which participating artists tackle said ideas. The finalists all have deeply insightful and essential practices but we were particularly taken with the formal sensibility of Dominique White’s work, and their engagement with complex ideas around myth, maritime history, and colonial past. We are delighted to award Dominique the Foundwork Prize this year, and would like to thank all participating artists, whose work we look forward to following in the months and years to come.”

The Foundwork Artist Prize reflects the Los Angeles-based platform’s larger purpose to create visibility and engagement for emerging and mid-career artists, and to enable discourse and access between artists, curators, and collaborators globally. In 2021, we had the unique opportunity to award two grantees—Kent Chan, an artist, curator, and filmmaker based between the Netherlands and Singapore, and Onyeka Igwe, a London-born and based artist and researcher working between cinema and installation. In 2020, the prize was awarded to Berlin-based multidisciplinary artist Tracey Snelling and, in 2019, our inaugural honoree was Puerto Rico-born artist, curator, and educator Edra Soto, who is based in Chicago.

About Dominique White
Dominique White weaves together theories of Black Subjectivity, Afro-pessimism, and Hydrarchy with the nautical myths of the Black Diaspora into a term she defines as the Shipwreck(ed); a reflexive verb and state of being. White’s sculptures, or beacons, prophesy the emergence of the Stateless; “a [Black] future that hasn’t yet happened, but must.” (Tina Campt, 2017; Kathryn Yusoff, 2018).

Recent and upcoming solo exhibitions and presentations have and will take place at La Casa Encendida, Madrid, 2023; Statements, ArtBasel, Basel, 2022; Triangle-Astérides, Marseille, 2022; VEDA, Florence, 2021–22; and UKS (Unge Kunstneres Samfund/Young Artists’ Society), Oslo, 2021. Recent group exhibitions have been hosted by MAXXI L’Aquila, 2022–23; Bold Tendencies, London, 2022; and commissioned by the Goethe-Institut (traveling), 2021–25.

White was shortlisted for the ninth edition of the Max Mara Prize for Women in 2022–24, was awarded the Roger Pailhas (Art-O-Rama) Prize in 2019 in conjunction with her solo presentation with VEDA, and received awards from Artangel and the Henry Moore Foundation in 2020. In 2020–21, White was in residency at Sagrada Mercancía in Chile, Triangle-Astérides in France, and La Becque in Switzerland. She lives mostly between Marseille, France and Essex, United Kingdom, and works nomadically.
