Year-long fellowship with salary and benefits
18th Street Arts Center California Creative Corps Project is now calling for applications from California artists and culture bearers interested in developing meaningful arts and culture projects in communities located within Quartile one ZIP codes of the California Healthy Places Index (HPI).
Jan Williamson, 18th Street Arts Center Executive Director said, “Whether you’re an artist or culture bearer already working to strengthen your community’s well-being, or if you would like to become an artist doing this kind of work, we strongly encourage you to apply and pitch your idea. What matters most is your passion and commitment.”
The 40 artists selected in round one will receive professional coaching in round two. Over several sessions held between February and March 2023, public art and community engagement specialists will assist participants in refining their project concept and budget. Round two participants will receive a 1,000 USD stipend.
All 40 round two proposals will be reviewed and a total of eighteen projects will be selected for support and funding. Artists not selected will have a fully-packaged project proposal ready to present to other funding sources.
Each of the final eighteen artists will receive a year-long salary of 65,000 USD, medical and dental insurance, the option to join 18th Street Art Center’s SIMPLE IRA plan with employer match and production costs for their community art project from July 2023–July 2024.
The eighteen funded artists will form the 18th Street Arts Center California Creative Corps, a year-long cohort whose projects, in addition to fostering community well-being, will generate knowledge and media assets to contribute to a statewide California Culture Map.
The culture map generated by 18th Street Arts Center statewide project will provide the context to inform public policy and accelerate solutions to community needs. 18th Street Arts Center believes culture mapping is essential infrastructure for successful collaboration between arts and culture producers and community leaders seeking to foster well-being among neighbors at the local level.
