Creativity with criticality and care
The Fine Art and Design (FAAD) master’s degree programme is conceived for students who seek to develop an individual arts- and design-based practice in a collective learning environment. The programme places an emphasis on facilitating creative experiments and collaboration, while also maintaining self-reflection and critical scrutiny in a caring and responsive setting. Programme graduates are able to take up a career as independent practicing artists or designers or as part of creative teams and interdisciplinary collectives. They are also well-suited for pursuing doctoral programmes in the fields of fine art, design, and other related disciplines.

The FAAD programme runs for four semesters over two academic years. Upon successful programme completion, students are awarded an internationally recognized master’s degree (MgA., Magister Artis).

Diverse range of current approaches to contemporary art and design
The FAAD programme encourages a broad range of experimental, interdisciplinary, and collaborative approaches to art and design practice in a total of 16 studios led by experienced tutors active in the fields of contemporary art and design. The field of design is represented by two independent Graphic Design Studios, Game Media Studio, and the Product Design Studio. Studios in the fields of intermedia and digital arts include the Environment, Performance, Video, Intermedia, Photography, and Body Design. Fine art studios include two independent Sculpture Studios, three independent Painting Studios, and a Drawing and Printmaking Studio. Additionally, students can apply to the Visiting Artist’s Studio led by a different internationally acclaimed artist each semester. Studio teaching is complemented by theoretical lectures on art history, aesthetics, philosophy, sociology, and a portfolio of elective courses based on the needs of each studio. Education and technology related tasks are supported by our Departments of Audiovisual Technology, Information Technology, Traditional Media, and 3D Technology—which also includes a 3D Studio established in 2007 as the first of its kind in the Czech Republic.

Our tutors and lecturers are notable artists, designers, and theoreticians active in the contemporary art scene. Studio leaders and assistant lecturers have developed their teaching methodology on their own artistic practice and experience. Members of our staff and alumni are internationally renowned in art and design.

Regular presentations of student works enable public confrontation and networking with gallerists, curators, and collectors alike. Significant support is provided by the FFA Gallery, a lively communication space for an emerging generation of artists and curators.

The city at the heart of Europe
Brno is an inspiring city popular among students and according to the Global Peace Index 2022, the Czech Republic ranks among the top ten peaceful countries worldwide. Brno is home to 13 universities and over 80,000 university students; out of the 380,000 people living in Brno, one in five is a student. Students appreciate Brno’s congenial international student community, varied leisure-time options, and close proximity to Prague, Vienna, Bratislava, and other important cultural centres.
