BASEhabitat is a studio within the department of architecture at the University of Arts Linz, working in the field of social and sustainable architecture and spatial development for 20 years now. The studio is implementing research, design and building projects based on regenerative materials, in collaboration with partners from all over the world.
BASEhabitat offers a wide range of study programmes, including a Master of Architecture, a Postgraduate Degree and an International Summer School. All three programmes explore the potential of regenerative building materials such as earth, fibres and bamboo, combining theoretical knowledge and practical experience.
The Postgraduate BASEhabitat is aimed at professionals and graduates in architecture who are looking for an educational context in which they can expand their skills and abilities in relation to social and ecological issues.
A special learning environment is created by an internationally renowned group of visiting professors, as well as BASEhabitat staff and students from around the world. They provide their expertise on various aspects of architectural processes, from project conception and social entrepreneurship through participatory design to the use of natural building materials.
The Postgraduate is a one-and-a-half-year course that consists of three terms of full-time study after which students receive a Master of Advanced Studies in Architecture—BASEhabitat (MAS) from the University of Arts Linz.

The BASEhabitat International Summer School—on earthen and bamboo construction takes place every other year. Next edition: June 16–30, 2023 in Altmünster, Austria.
Regenerative building materials not only have a long tradition in human settlement, but also offer many advantages for contemporary architecture. Join BASEhabitat for this two-week practical course and learn from the world leading experts in earth and bamboo construction!
Guests like Anna Heringer and Martin Rauch will give inspiring lectures and share their experience and visions. Opportunities for exchange and networking are an integral part of the programme.
The summer school addresses architects, students, lecturers, craftspeople and engineers from all over the world, who are interested in sustainable architecture.

The Master BASEhabitat is aimed at people that have a bachelor’s degree in architecture, and want to specialise in sustainable architecture within the master's programme.
The programme provides knowledge about regenerative materials such as earth and fibres, fungal mycelium or lime, which are directly applied in the design and the realisation of architectural projects.
These projects benefit a community and are developed in collaboration with partner NGOs. Hands-on experience in workshops and on the construction site is an essential part of the programme. The master's programme is held in German!
