About SAM Residencies
One of Asia’s most comprehensive interdisciplinary residency programmes, SAM Residencies aims to provide platforms for artistic experimentation and expression. Taking place in Singapore, the selected residents will meet and work in SAM’s Tanjong Pagar Distripark industrial warehouse turned art space against the backdrop of the iconic Tanjong Pagar Port.
SAM Residencies is a platform for residents to engage in active dialogue, collaborations and co-creation between residents, audiences, and the art community. Tailored for up-and-coming artists, curators and practitioners, SAM Residencies aims to serve as a catalyst for collaborative and collective becoming.
Supported by SAM’s curatorial team and associated networks, the residents will delve deeper into their respective research interests, generate new approaches and develop discursive platforms culminating in various public and closed-door activations.
With each cycle reflecting contemporary concerns, Cycle 2 focuses on themes of postindustrialism, critical alliances, and the possibilities of a transformed future – broadly confronting burgeoning questions on recent capitalism, ground-up initiatives concerning mutual aid and thinking through perspectives on our collective futures.
The residents were juried by an international panel, comprising Isabella Rjeille, Curator at Museu de Arte de São Paulo Assis Chateaubriand, São Paulo; Ade Darmawan, artist, curator and member of ruangrupa, Jakarta; Tan Pin Pin, filmmaker and artist, Singapore; Patrick Flores, Deputy Director (Curatorial & Research) at National Gallery Singapore; and was chaired by Shabbir Hussain Mustafa, Senior Curator and Deputy Director (Residencies) at SAM and National Gallery Singapore.
SAM looks forward to welcoming the second cycle of incoming residents from July 2023 onwards. Each residency will span a period of one to six months and run until December 2024.
