e-flux Architecure presents “An Eye Half Open Only to Architecture,” a lecture by Felicity D. Scott at e-flux on Saturday, May 27 at 5pm.

Wolfgang Tillmans’ Book for Architects was first realized at the invitation of Rem Koolhaas for the 2014 International Architecture Exhibition in Venice. This talk will revisit the work not only in the context of the Venice biennale and subsequent iterations, but as a lens through which to read the artist’s multi-faceted engagement with architecture’s disciplinary mandates, its media-technical vehicles, and its entanglements with neoliberalism and market forces. With this installation, that is, Tillmans’ practice of “observation,” of photographing architecture otherwise, he reprises his earlier artistic strategies while opening onto his complex and compelling reading of architecture’s role in the emergence of an increasingly “economized approach to life” under global capitalism.

Felicity D Scott is a scholar based in New York, where she teaches at Columbia University. She writes on architecture, art, and media, often articulating their mutual entanglements, and their inscription within genealogies of techno-scientific, institutional, and geopolitical transformations. Her books include Architecture or Techno-Utopia: Politics After Modernism (MIT Press, 2007), Ant Farm (Actar, 2008), Outlaw Territories: Environments of Insecurity/Architectures of Counter-Insurgency (Zone Books, 2016), and Disorientations: Bernard Rudofsky in the Empire of Signs (Sternberg Press, 2016). Her current work focuses on architecture’s relation to mechanisms of global environmental governance in the 1960s and 1970s, and the developmental and media regimes that informed the shifting topology of the so-called Global North and Global South. “An Eye Half Open Only to Architecture” is presented as part of e-flux Architecture Lectures, a monthly series inviting researchers and practitioners to discuss timely issues in contemporary architecture, theory, culture, and technology.
