Art Jameel, an organisation that supports artists and creative communities, launches an international open call for early career curators to submit exhibition proposals developed for Hayy Jameel’s museum space—Hayy Arts—in Jeddah, for a May 2024 opening. The open call is part of Hayy Jameel’s commitment to supporting curatorial research and development. Early career curators—individuals or collectives—are encouraged to share proposals that engage with the geography and history of Hayy Jameel’s location, particularly themes related to connections in and around the Red Sea—its connected geographies, histories, ecologies and the movement of people and ideas. The awarded curator will work alongside the Art Jameel team who will provide guidance and support on the exhibition’s development, production and design, logistics and installation.
Art Jameel is accepting proposals from curators working anywhere whose research and exhibition-making engage with the following topics:
–Jeddah/Hejaz histories
–Red Sea ecologies
–Red Sea histories of migration—the movement of people and ideas
–Geographies connected to/ in relation with the Red Sea (e.g. Egypt, Saudi, Yemen, Sudan, Eritrea, Djibouti, Palestine, Jordan)
Award details
–Curatorial fee of 37,500 SAR (approx. 10,000 USD)
–Curator travel and accommodation fees to be covered by Art Jameel
–Artists fees, travel and accommodation to be covered by Art Jameel
–All exhibition costs related to producing, installing and promoting the exhibition to be covered by Art Jameel

Hayy Jameel is developed and managed by Art Jameel as Saudi Arabia’s dedicated arts complex and creative hub. Hayy joins Jameel Arts Centre in Dubai—which opened in 2018—in its efforts to build culture-oriented, connected communities. Designed by waiwai, Hayy references the Arabic word for neighbourhood, denoting the convivial and collaborative nature of the complex and its intent on bringing together a wide range of creative disciplines in one destination.
The Art Jameel-run exhibitions space Hayy Arts anchors the creative complex, presenting robust, curated, museum-style shows—featuring Saudi and international artists and designers—that address themes of local and global relevance. Hayy Arts’ exhibitions are accompanied by an extensive public programme that includes talks, performances, learning opportunities and a film programme, plus a range of workshops and activities for children, youth and lifelong-learners.

Silent Hands

A group exhibition exploring questions of work and leisure in Asia and its diasporas featuring works by Pacita Abad, Hangama Amiri, Mohammed Kazem, Maha Malluh, Khairullah Rahim, Anhar Salem and Aarti Sunder. The exhibition engages with spaces of work, both physical and virtual, and their intersections with gender, financial independence, social mobility and migration.
Curated by Art Jameel’s Rotana Shaker, alongside guest curators Zain Al Saie and Jean Wong.
Accommodations

Rooted in research, Accommodations displays rare found images, archival material, urban plans, architectural models, renders, sketches and ephemera that trace the history of shelters, examining how the built environment and urban fabric adapt to accommodate shifting social conditions.
The exhibition tours from the Saudi Pavilion at the 17th International Venice Architecture Biennale and is designed as an experiential show unfolding in three parts, featuring the research of architects Hussam Dakkak, Basmah Kaki and Hessa AlBader of Studio Bound curated by Uzma Z. Rizvi and Murtaza Vali.
