An anthology of works by over 100 radio artists, edited and designed by Sarah Washington.
Radio Art Zone explores the central themes and techniques of artist-made radio, emerging from 25 years of practice in the field. It is a reflection of the world’s largest exhibition of radio art, also titled Radio Art Zone, a project by the artist duo Mobile Radio (Sarah Washington & Knut Aufermann) produced in collaboration with Luxembourg community station Radio ARA. For 100 days Radio Art Zone transmitted 22-hour-long works created by over 200 artists as part of the European Capital of Culture Esch2022. Broadcast on 16 partner radio stations, it attracted more than 300,000 listeners worldwide.
Radio Art Zone is an artist book intended to present radio as an art form to a wider public for the first time. It features newly commissioned works ranging from micro-essays and texts on radio form, practice and poetics, to radio plays, illustrations, photographs, and excerpts from long-form radio productions. A work of art in its own right, Radio Art Zone performs an exquisite transformation from airwaves to paper, providing a treasury of ideas about radio as art.
