SELF-PIXEL

Remai Modern is excited to announce its new web commission, SELF-PIXEL, 2016, by the internationally renowned artist Thomas Hirschhorn.
In association with its pre-launch programs, Remai Modern is inviting artists to realize original projects exclusively for online viewing. On the first day of every month, work by a new artist will appear on Remai Modern’s homepage. Previous commissions by Ryan Gander, Tammi Campbell and Tanya Lukin Linklater remain accessible in the online archive. Through these commissions, the museum considers its website as an extension of its physical space and onsite program. Mobile and experimental, this online gallery allows for direct, personal encounters with art while connecting artists and audiences across the globe.
Thomas Hirschhorn is considered one of the most singular and formally engaged artists of our time. Hirschhorn is renowned for his sprawling, immersive artworks that use everyday materials, found images and texts to engage audiences in actively thinking and facing the reality of our world.
SELF-PIXEL is a work that engages with the problematic of pixelation as the artist states: “'Self-pixel' comes from Pixel-Collage, my most recent works and engagement with the problematic of pixelation. My statement is that pixelation is not a technique, not a system but a decision. Putting or removing each pixel—or even cutting it into smaller pixel parts—is a decision. It’s a political decision. I believe that ‘pixelation’ or blurring, masking and furthermore censorship or self-censorship, is a growing and insidious problematic, also in regard the new social medias. Obviously I don’t accept what has been pixelated in my place ‘to protect me’ and obviously don’t pixelate what is usually concealed and meant to be removed, to frustrate, censor or make non-visible.“

The web commissions are curated by Gregory Burke, Executive Director & CEO, and Sandra Guimarães, Director of Programs & Chief Curator at Remai Modern.
As part of Remai Modern pre-launch programs, a lecture by Thomas Hirschhorn will take place at the Frances Morrison Central Library in Saskatoon on Tuesday, September 27, at 6:30pm.
