The Piet Zwart Institute is open for new applications. Due to the quantity of applications the Piet Zwart Institute master’s programmes receive, regulations regarding immigration, and international opportunities to apply for study funding, we strongly encourage you to apply early. Join us for our open day on Saturday, February 10.

March 4, 2024: Priority deadline for completed applications of Dutch, EU applicants. Final deadline non-EU applicants. (*This deadline doesn’t apply to the Master Design, for more information check here). May 8, 2024: Final deadline for completed applications of Dutch and EU applicants.

The Piet Zwart Institute houses the international Master programs of the Willem de Kooning Academy at Rotterdam University of Applied Sciences (RUAS). WdKA’s Master’s programs are positioned within the Piet Zwart Institute (PZI), which currently hosts a little over 120 students. Named after the pioneering Dutch designer Piet Zwart, who worked experimentally across different media and contexts, the Institute offers a rich combination of in-depth specialisation and interdisciplinary exchange within an intimate learning environment. The programs of the Piet Zwart Institute are located in Rotterdam’s city centre. Students and staff come from around the globe and bring with them a variety of cultural influences and international connections. In addition to these international ties, the program maintains strong local connections to the city of Rotterdam, its history and ever-changing urban environment.

The Piet Zwart Institute houses four full-time Master programs, Interior Architecture: Research + Design (MIARD); Master of Arts in Fine Art and Design, which encompasses Fine Art (MFA) Lens-Based Media (LB) and Experimental Publishing (XPUB) and two part-time Master programs, Education in Arts (MEiA) and Master Design. Through uniquely tailored curricula combining collective learning, individual tutorials, practice-based research and theoretical inquiry, the programs educate professionals who have a critically reflective, innovative, questioning and imaginative approach to their work. Our graduates go on to not only establish themselves in their field, but also challenge and creatively define the parameters of their profession.

As an educational institute and cultural centre, the notion of ‘making public’ is core to the activities of PZI. Exhibitions, programming, conferences and publications on a national and international level are a means of sharing and expanding our research beyond the confines of academia. At the same time, the program provides the very necessary speculative space for reflection and knowledge-building that is only made possible through an academic framework like the Piet Zwart Institute.

Open day 2024
Join us for the Piet Zwart Institute open day which will take place on Saturday February 110 from 10am–3pm. Throughout the day both the Willem de Kooning Academy (WdKA) and the Piet Zwart Institute (PZI) Master studio spaces will be open to the public. It is a day when many PZI staff, students and alumni are present to answer your questions. Some of our Master programmes will hold presentations, and it is also a time when the WdKA stations (workshops) located throughout the WdKA Blaak 10 and Wijnhaven 61 buildings are open for you to visit, giving you a better idea of our current facilities.

In addition to this year’s open day at the main WdKa-building, the Master Fine Art welcomes you for Open Studio’s in their building at the Karel Doormanhof 45, also from 10am till 3pm.

Here you will find more specific information per master program and their programming during the day. Apply to the Piet Zwart Institute. Contact: Piet Zwart Institute, P.O. Box 1272, 3000 BG Rotterdam, The Netherlands. pzi.admission [at] hr.nl.
