Rice University’s Department of Art is seeking a Lecturer in Photography for immediate hire.

The Department of Art at Rice University is seeking to hire a two-year lecturer in residence who is an artist and art educator with primary interests in the field of photography as it relates to contemporary art practices. A successful candidate will be responsible for teaching six undergraduate courses each academic year (three fall and three spring), as well as participating in student advising and mentoring. The successful candidate will be an actively exhibiting artist with a record of teaching excellence and an ability to collaborate on the administration and coordination of our undergraduate photography curriculum. Candidates must have an MFA; significant organization, communication, and collaborative skills; and a substantive understanding of the general history, practice, theory, and criticism of contemporary art and design. We are particularly interested in candidates who demonstrate through their teaching, mentorship, and art practice a commitment to the inclusion of historically underrepresented perspectives; candidates whose work emerges from or speaks toward communities of African Americans, Asian Americans, Latinx or Native Americans are especially encouraged to apply.

We are seeking a candidate with broad experience and a familiarity with many levels and avenues of public engagement with art, an engagement with theoretical positions and ideas of art and aesthetics, an experimental mindset, and the desire to foster a creative environment in a diverse educational setting. Given that Rice art students are predominately double majors, our photography program’s curriculum is in dialogue with other disciplines (such as architecture, engineering, and medical humanities) to a degree that might be different from other programs. We are looking for a candidate who can participate in the process of expanding and redefining a photography curriculum in this context. Rice is a small but growing art department in which mentoring of individual advanced students is a core part of a professor’s teaching experience. Rice University is a liberal arts research university offering a visual arts curriculum in film production, performance art, and the studio arts (printmaking, painting, drawing, sculpture, and digital as well as traditional photography).

Rice is located in Houston, Texas, a culturally diverse metropolitan city with a strong visual arts community. The department enjoys a talented and intellectually curious group of student majors, along with progressive academic offerings and collaborations with The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, The Menil Collection, the Contemporary Arts Museum, Houston, the Museum of Fine Arts Houston Glassell School of Art (Core Fellow Program), and many alternative art spaces and galleries.

This is a full-time, benefits-eligible, non-tenure track position with a salary of 60,000 USD.

To be considered for this position, please send a letter summarizing your interests and qualifications along with a current curriculum vitae, three names with contact information for letters of recommendation should your application status progress to the short list stage, 15-20 samples of personal work and brief statements on teaching and research philosophies.

Submission materials parameters
Photography, New Media, Installation, etc.: 15–20 digital images. Time-based work: film, video, performance, etc.—up to three examples totaling no more than ten minutes in length provided through an URL. Application review will begin on June 21, 2024. Interested candidates are encouraged to apply before that date.
