Incinerator Art Award 2024, in its tenth anniversary year, is the premier annual art award commissioned by the City of Moonee Valley and hosted by Incinerator Gallery in the north-western suburbs of Melbourne/Naarm, Australia. It recognises artists advocating for social change within local communities and across Australia. In 2024, an esteemed panel of independent art professionals shortlisted 27 emerging and established artists from over 260 applications.
The prestigious Incinerator Art Award series is inspired by the visionary ideals of Walter Burley Griffin and Marion Mahony Griffin, architects of the original Incinerator building, who championed the harmonious integration of Modernism with nature, social equity, and environmentalism. Their ethos, born in the early 20th Century, continues to resonate with contemporary culture and embodies the Incinerator Art Award’s mission for social change.
Incinerator Art Award’s 2024 shortlisted artists passionately present diverse artworks exploring critical social issues, including Indigenous knowledge, queer histories, climate crisis, class, gender, and identity.
Incinerator Art Award offers three prizes, including the AUD 10,000 Incinerator Art Award, the AUD 1,000 Moonee Valley Mayoral Award and the AUD 1,000 People’s Choice Award.
Judges represent Melbourne/Naarm’s contemporary art community: Bec Cole, Executive Director and Co-CEO of Footscray Community Arts; Nikki Lam, Artist-Curator and Co-Director of Hyphenated Projects and Biennial; Sebastian Henry-Jones, Curator at West Space.
The Incinerator Art Award 2024 exhibition is curated by the Incinerator Gallery Team, Jake Treacy, Curator and MJ Flamiano, Public Art Officer.
