The Irwin S. Chanin School of Architecture of The Cooper Union invites applications for a full-time tenure-track Assistant or Associate faculty position in the History, Theory, and Criticism of Architecture. Academic rank will be commensurate with credentials. Starting in fall 2025, this role will support our undergraduate professional five-year program (Bachelor of Architecture) and a post-professional graduate program (Master of Science in Architecture).
We seek applications from architectural scholars whose research engages with the pressing issues of our time through a historical and theoretical lens. Candidates must demonstrate a strong record of scholarship, a dedicated research focus, and a well-defined pedagogical approach. An active research and publication agenda is essential. The school values dynamic scholars prepared to teach foundational courses in architectural history, upper-level undergraduate electives in their area of expertise, conduct graduate seminars, and participate in studio design reviews. Responsibilities of this position also include advising and administrative work on committees.
With an emphasis on diversity, this is an opportunity to engage candidates from a great range of backgrounds, focusing on various areas within architectural discourse. Candidates should be conversant with a range of intellectual arenas that impact contemporary thinking, from history and theory to technologies and sustainability, critical research and analysis, with an eye on the political underpinnings that both drive and result from architectural thinking.
This is a transformative moment for The Cooper Union. Thus, candidates should demonstrate the capacity to translate the Mission of The Cooper Union toward contemporary debates, relevant cultural issues, and emerging pedagogies. Candidates must demonstrate the capacity for intellectual leadership and the ability to engage students, faculty, and the Schools of Art and Engineering as well as the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences. Candidates will be expected to foster cross-program and cross-college collaboration in research, creative practice, and the profession and offer significant opportunities for engagement and partnership. Candidates will also be expected to establish strong communication with the discipline beyond The Cooper Union, maintaining a voice in lectures, symposia, exhibitions, and the cultural life in NYC and the world beyond.
The qualifications for the candidate include a Doctoral degree. Candidates should have completed the Ph.D. by the position start date (September 1st 2025). Previous teaching experience in an undergraduate or graduate program in architecture or a related design discipline is expected.

Compensation: Salary will be based on qualifications and experience, determined by rank.
–Assistant Professor: starting minimum salary: 90,000 USD
–Associate Professor: starting minimum salary: 100,000 USD
