The Master of Science in Architecture at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) is a research-driven program that addresses the urgent challenges of our time: climate change, resource scarcity, digital transformation, and the social dynamics of urban environments. Our program combines strong theoretical foundations with hands-on, studio-based design practice. Students are encouraged to develop individual focus areas through interdisciplinary electives and real-world projects.

KIT’s Department of Architecture is one of Germany’s most renowned architecture schools, tracing its legacy back to 1825. Our graduates are equipped with the skills, tools, and mindset to design responsibly and creatively—globally and locally.
 
Core focus areas
Students explore a wide range of topics, including:
–Sustainable construction, with an emphasis on circular building materials and regenerative design strategies;
–Digital planning tools and technologies that shape contemporary architectural practice;
–Urban design and spatial strategies for resilient cities;
–Architectural heritage, analyzed critically as a foundation for future innovation.
 
Learning environment and resources
The Department of Architecture provides studio spaces for master students with 24/7 access, well-equipped model-building, wood, metal and photography workshops, and a print lab. Our dedicated Architecture Library offers a rich collection of books, journals, and digital resources, while the Material Library hosts a diverse range of tactile samples—including many pioneering sustainable materials.

Students benefit from small studio groups and close supervision by highly engaged department members with both national and international reputations, as well as from participation in a rich department life with numerous lectures, exhibitions, excursions, and student-led events.
 
Practice, research, and award-winning projects
Our students engage in interdisciplinary research and design projects, often in collaboration with professionals, institutions, and cities. A highlight is RoofKIT, a building prototype that won the Solar Decathlon Europe 21–22. The project exemplifies KIT’s unique integration of sustainability, innovation, and education.
The department is also closely linked to saai / Archive for Architecture and Engineering, one of the most significant architecture collections in Germany.
