General information about the University of Arts and Design Karlsruhe, Germany
Since 1992, the Karlsruhe University of Arts and Design (HfG) has stood for the interdisciplinary combination of art, design and theory. It offers its students a unique space for dedicated learning, research and experimentation.
Whether Communication Design, Product Design, Media Art, Exhibition Design & Scenography or Art Studies & Media Philosophy - what all courses have in common is interdisciplinary, mostly project-based work and individual support for students. The cooperation with the Center for Art and Media (ZKM - Zentrum für Medienkunst), which is located in the same building, underlines and expands this interdisciplinary orientation. In addition to its own courses, the HfG regularly awards visiting professorships and teaching assignments to international artists and academics. There are also worldwide exchange programs and partnerships with regional and international universities and cultural institutions, such as the neighboring Staatliche Kunsthalle Karlsruhe or Städtische Galerie Karlsruhe.
The combination of theory and practice at HfG Karlsruhe is primarily aimed at developing independence and preparing students for a wide range of professional requirements. Those who choose to study at the university enjoy the freedom to develop their own potential. Students can exhibit their work in temporary exhibitions or, for example, the annual public tour (Rundgang) at the end of the academic year, present lecture and film programs and also participate in their implementation, as well as in artistic and scientific research projects.
The HfG Karlsruhe is one of the few universities in Germany to award the Diplom and Magister Artium degrees, which offer great freedom in the design of their study fields. All degrees are fully Bologna-compatible and internationally recognized.
