Tan Yingjie: Shrinking of the Present, Whereas…

Wind H Art Center is honored to announce the debut institutional solo exhibition of artist Yingjie Tan, Shrinking of the Present, Whereas... Curated by Yifei Tang, the exhibition will be held from April 12 to June 2.

The present of modern society is shrinking, and technological acceleration has transformed the structure of time, consequently altering space. Urban public spaces are shrouded in layers of images and symbols, leading to a fading understanding of inner essence and historical context. An individual’s experience within such spaces is reduced to a platform for deploying pre-planned tools and information, losing the sense of public intimacy once held in memory. Yingjie Tan’s latest sculptures and installations that span different temporal and spatial scales, such as When the Things Come to Us, The Past Things, and The Moving Things (all created in 2025), critically and sensitively deconstructs and reconstructs the development as well as the transformation of urban spaces. He also reflects on how urbanization shapes individuals and the planet.

The exhibition will prominently feature a performance titled When the Things Come to Us, directed by Yingjie Tan. The installation, bearing the same name, will occupy the main exhibition hall. As the performance unfolds, the installation will expand and evolve. It will make its debut on the opening day. Set against the backdrop of urban life, the performance When the Things Come to Us portrays the individual’s rejection and sense of alienation within the city. It envisions the protagonist’s futile attempt to fold time and space using memories. In this dreamscape, the city emerges as an awakened organic entity.
