The Julia Stoschek Foundation proudly presents UNBOUND, a compelling new podcast hosted by Line Ajan and Lisa Long, with editorial direction by Luise Pilz, that critically examines the evolution of performance art and its intersections with video across the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. Through in-depth conversations with artists, scholars, and writers, UNBOUND takes into consideration a nuanced understanding of how gender, race, and class have affected these histories up until the present.

Across six episodes, the podcast brings together a distinguished line up of guests, including renowned scholars Greg de Cuir Jr., Amelia Jones, Uri McMillan, and Peggy Phelan; artists Salim Bayri, Nao Bustamante, peter campus, Ulysses Jenkins, Stanya Kahn, Tarek Lakhrissi, Fritjof Mangerich, mandla, Howardena Pindell, and Mona Varichon; and writer Marilena Borriello. These contributors broaden the traditional definition of performance by exploring lesser-known histories and challenging conventional art historical narratives. Their transdisciplinary and situated approaches highlight the radical potential of performance as an embodied form of artistic and political expression.

Each episode of UNBOUND is driven by a set of questions such as: How have artists and scholars expanded the canonical definitions of performance and video, by looking at under-recognized practices and histories? How have different generations of artists called upon the body in relation to the camera to unsettle fixed concepts of identity? And how does performance function in an era of digital hyper-visibility?

UNBOUND expands on questions initially examined in the exhibition “Unbound: Performance as Rupture,” which took place at the Julia Stoschek Foundation in Berlin between September 2023 and July 2024. The exhibition was co-curated by Lisa Long with Line Ajan.

The first episode of the podcast is now available on major podcast platforms with new episodes being released weekly. UNBOUND is a Julia Stoschek Foundation production.
