Tapta: Angulaire (n.d. 2024) at Frieze London

Gallery Baton will present Angulaire (n.d./2024, e.d. 2/8) by Polish-Belgian sculptor Tapta (1926–97) for the first time at its booth C21 in Fireze London 2025.

Tapta, whose work expanded the margins of European modern sculpture, is now being rediscovered for her pioneering use of non-art materials—textiles, neoprene, and industrial metal—to radically reimagine the material and spatial language of sculpture in the late 20th century. Recent retrospectives at WIELS (Brussels, 2023) and Museum Susch (Switzerland, 2024) affirm that her sculptural vocabulary remains as radical and resonant today as ever.

Angulaire stands as a definitive example of Tapta’s late 1980s neoprene-based sculptures, a body of work that repositions minimalist form and industrial materiality as a site of embodied tension. The elongated isosceles triangle, divided with an elegant curve and supported upright through a simple metal hinge, invites viewers into a continuously shifting dialogue between form and gaze, weight and space.

While deceptively simple in construction, the piece signals a decisive material transition from woven fiber to structural sculpture, capturing the moment where softness meets rigidity. It also condenses Tapta’s conceptual proposition—what she referred to as an “open sculptural language” that moves fluidly between private and public, material and symbolic. Angulaire serves as the prototype for Tapta’s monumental final work, Esprit Ouvert (1997, steels & stainless steel), which remains permanently installed in the public square near Brussels North Station.
