Jamea Richmond-Edwards / EXODUS

EXODUS, a group exhibition curated by artist Jamea Richmond-Edwards, honors the peers, mentors, and collaborators who have shaped her creative path, and underscores the importance of artistic community as a source of resilience and shared growth.

This exhibition runs concurrently with the major solo exhibition Jamea Richmond-Edwards: Another World and Yet the Same, which offers an immersive look at the expansive practice of the Detroit-based artist. The exhibition brings together recent mixed-media paintings from the last seven years with an ambitious new body of work created specifically for the Wellin, marking a pivotal moment in the artist’s evolving career.

Richmond-Edwards’s work is deeply shaped by Detroit—its communities, its music, and its visual culture—and by her ongoing engagement with questions of identity, belonging, and survival. Across large-scale, richly layered compositions, she combines painting, collage, drawing, and sculptural elements to construct scenes that are at once celebratory and speculative. Fashion, sound, and movement play a central role, animating portraits of family, friends, and imagined figures who move through spaces charged with rhythm and history.

In keeping with the Wellin Museum’s mission to make art accessible to all, the exhibition is accompanied by robust video content that brings the galleries and conversations surrounding the work directly to audiences everywhere. Central to this is an exhibition film by Brett Novak, offering viewers direct insight into the artist’s practice, creative process, and the works created specifically for this exhibition.

A Virtual Preview of the Exhibition offers a guided tour led by Richmond-Edwards alongside Alexander Jarman, Assistant Curator of Exhibitions and Academic Outreach, with additional insights from Melanee C. Harvey, Associate Professor and Coordinator of Art History at Howard University.
