Luci d’Artista is arguably the most prestigious and historic public art project in Italy. It was established in 1998 by the City of Turin, founded on the belief that art should contribute to the common good and inhabit the city’s streets, squares, and buildings. Initially conceived as exceptional festive illuminations for the holiday season, the lights quickly transcended their original function with an ambitious goal: to create a public collection of large-scale environmental, urban, and architectural installations by leading international artists and expression of a refined culture capable of speaking to everyone.
On October 24 the twenty-eighth edition of Luci d’Artista, curated by Antonio Grulli, officially opened, once again transforming Turin into a grand stage of light. The city’s sky comes alive with 33 luminous installations, enriched this year by five new works by prominent international artists: Chiara Camoni, Gintaras Didžiapetris, Tracey Emin, and Riccardo Previdi—whose pieces will become part of the collection—along with a special project by the collective Soundwalk Collective, created in collaboration with Patti Smith and Philip Glass.
With the support of the Lithuanian Culture Institute, as part of the Year of Lithuanian Culture in Italy, the major neon work Untitled (2013) by Lithuanian artist Gintaras Didžiapetris is presented on the façade of the Museo Regionale di Scienze Naturali. Originally created for the legendary joint Lithuanian and Cypriot Pavilion (oO) at the 55th Venice Biennale, the work now finds a permanent home in Turin.
The 2025 edition also features among its protagonists an icon of international art: the British artist Tracey Emin. Her participation has been made possible thanks to the Fondazione Arte CRT which, to mark its twenty-fifth anniversary, donates to the city a prestigious neon work titled Sex and Solitude (2025), installed in the lower Royal Gardens and signed by one of the world’s most acclaimed figures, author, among the multiple artistic languages she works with, of celebrated luminous creations.
Another significant addition is the partnership with the Nitto ATP Finals, the year-end event of the ATP world tennis circuit, which supported the production of Bouncing the Ball (2025), conceived and created by Riccardo Previdi for Piazza San Carlo. Inspired by the opening gesture of a tennis match and designed in dialogue with the square’s twin churches, the work will be inaugurated on the evening of November 8.
The historic collaboration with OGR Torino continues to grow and evolve with a special project conceived for the monumental courtyard of the complex, where the video Mummer Love (2025) by Soundwalk Collective will be presented, created in collaboration with the legendary poet and singer-songwriter Patti Smith and the American composer Philip Glass. The work explores Arthur Rimbaud’s Ethiopian period, intertwining sound recordings from the poet’s house in Harar, Sufi chants, a piano interpretation by Philip Glass, and Patti Smith’s voice reading excerpts from Illuminations.
Since its inception, Luci d’Artista has evolved into a true contemporary art institution active throughout the year, thanks to the organization of the Fondazione Torino Musei and the curatorship of Antonio Grulli over the past three editions. Throughout its history, some of the world’s greatest artists have contributed to the event with interventions that have become part of the collective imagination, seamlessly integrated into Turin’s urban fabric. One need only think of Mario Merz’s famous neon on the dome of the Mole Antonelliana, now a symbol of the city.
The 28th edition of Luci d’Artista includes: Mario Airò, Andreas Angelidakis, Giovanni Anselmo, Valerio Berruti, Daniel Buren, Chiara Camoni, Francesco Casorati, Nicola De Maria, Gintaras Didžiapetris, Tracey Emin, Marco Gastini, Piero Gilardi, Giorgio Griffa, Jeppe Hein, Rebecca Horn, Alfredo Jaar, Joseph Kosuth, Renato Leotta, Luigi Mainolfi, Mario Merz, Mario Molinari, Luigi Nervo, Luigi Ontani, Luca Pannoli, Giulio Paolini, Michelangelo Pistoletto, Riccardo Previdi, Tobias Rehberger, Vanessa Safavi, Soundwalk Collective with Patti Smith and Philip Glass, Luigi Stoisa, Grazia Toderi e Gilberto Zorio.
Each year the project is joined by the collateral lights created by institutions gathered in the Costellazione section, the rich Public Program titled Accademia della Luce, and the international collaborations of Duet.
