From July 1–4, the University of Applied Arts Vienna presents its various departments’ activities to the public. Exhibitions and graduation projects from all disciplines can be visited individually or as part of guided tours. A multidisciplinary programme accompanies the exhibitions and demonstrates how the Angewandte engages with contemporary social, cultural, and political questions across disciplinary boundaries.
Those engagements will also extend spatially to Oskar-Kokoschka-Platz, where students of the Institute of Language Arts will transform it into a place of linguistic exploration of what is missing. Who speaks to whom? Who doesn’t? Which worlds sustain this square? Where is there still urgent work to be done?
Under the theme “unfinished business,” texts are spoken in chorus, condensed, and linger in the air. In this way, a place shaped by language and speaking emerges—a place that remains unfinished and in transformation. Once again, the street is closed to traffic, highlighting the importance of public space in the city—as a consumption-free space that enables encounters.
The engagement and entanglement of the Angewandte with society and democratic values can also be perceived in the exhibitions and through various formats, some of which have an inclusive focus. To mention just a few: guided tours for families, readings with sign language interpretation, tours that focus on tactility, and playful formats that allow for unexpected encounters with the institution. The festival radiates into the city, but it also resonates inward, bringing together members of the university’s communities and demonstrating why the Angewandte is recognised internationally as a significant institution for education in art, design, architecture, as well as interdisciplinary theory and practice.
The graphic design by students of the Department of Design and Narrative Media is a conscious counterpoint to conventional design and challenges entrenched habits of seeing. The students refuse coherence, embrace the absurd, and choose contradiction. The Angewandte never stands still. Its vibrancy and the full range of its artistic production, research, and discourse unfold most vividly during the days of the Angewandte Festival.

‘AAA Summer 26 (Angewandte graduation projects)
The majority of the graduation projects are exhibited in the university buildings as part of the festival. Since the winter semester 21/22 the final projects of Angewandte are presented digitally at aaa.dieangewandte.at—the website grows with each semester.
