The russian war against Ukraine is a horrific confrontation of the forces of destruction with humanity. In this irrational aggression, marked by blind hatred and a nihilistic pursuit of annihilation, the collapse of all values that once seemed obvious and shared by contemporary civilisation is materialised. It is a war against a sovereign state, fuelled by hatred towards the very idea of liberal democracy—towards freedom, equity, justice, and peace. 

russia does not act in isolation. It is supported by other authoritarian regimes for which democracy is the main enemy. These autocracies, despite cultural and historical differences, share a common desire—to destroy a world based on equality. Their actions have one common goal—to destroy the global order. In this context, the russian war against Ukraine is more than just a regional conflict between two countries. It is the first great clash in many years between good and evil, between those who want to build and those who seek to destroy. The border between russia and Ukraine has become a plate boundary of two colliding global tectonic plates: autocracy and democracy. 

Voices From Ukraine is a broad overview of contemporary Ukrainian art, created exclusively by artists who continue to live in Ukraine under the conditions of full-scale war. Among the participants are both established figures and emerging voices, as well as artists currently serving in the Ukrainian Armed Forces. They are at the very epicentre of these events, and their art serves both as a reflection and a testimony. They respond to war not only as a subject, but as the context in which they live.

The exhibition in Lublin is the main part of the Voices From Ukraine project. It is accompanied by two other shows: Voices From Ukraine. Borderlands at BWA Zielona Góra (September 5–26, 2025), curated by Daryna Skrynnyk-Myska and Wojciech Kozlowski, which focuses on the motif of the border—physical and mental—as an existential and geopolitical metaphor; and Voices From Ukraine. Landscapes at BWA Wrocław (September 26, 2025–January 25, 2026), curated by Marta Gendera, which reflects on the impact of the war on nature, space, and collective identity. Together, they create a palimpsest of works created at a special moment in history, prompting reflection on what the future might look like.
