Stanford’s visiting artist programs encourage experimentation, exploration, and education in interdisciplinary arts research and practice. During the 2025–26 academic year, Stanford welcomes the following acclaimed artists for deep campus engagements:
Hanif Abdurraqib is an award-winning poet, essayist, and cultural critic from Columbus, Ohio. Hosted by Stanford Public Humanities and the Creative Writing Program with funding from the Stanford Visiting Artist Fund in Honor of Roberta Bowman Denning, Abdurraqib will connect deeply with faculty and students across departments and programs through public lectures and smaller engagements such as writing workshops, classroom visits, and more.
Alia Farid is an interdisciplinary artist who Stanford commissioned for a recent flagship public art installation, Amulets. She will return to campus for a residency hosted by the Stanford Humanities Center and the Office of the Vice President for the Arts, through which she will continue exploring the relationship of industrial practices and hand-made objects as a method of critical inquiry in the midst of global precarity.
Chinaka Hodge is a poet, playwright, and screenwriter. Hosted by the Institute for Diversity in the Arts as part of their 25th anniversary programming, Hodge will teach a course on the Bay Area's radical influence on Modern American Cinema from the standpoint of both creator and critic.
Ramon Perisé is a culinary researcher, artist, and thinker whose work blends science, sensation, and storytelling across disciplines. Hosted by the Department of Bioengineering with support from the Doerr School of Sustainability Visiting Artist Program and the Office of the Vice President for the Arts, Perisé’s activities will provide hands-on opportunities to engage with fermentation at a sensory, emotional level to push the status quo and spark meaningful conversations around food.
D. A. Powell is the author of five collections, including Useless Landscape, or A Guide for Boys, which received the National Book Critics Circle Award in poetry. Hosted by the Creative Writing Program as part of the Mohr Visiting Poet program, Powell will teach a course on writing poetry in the age of the moving picture.
Erika Chong Shuch is a choreographer, director, and performance maker whose work spans experimental performance and social practice, often inventing unexpected forms of audience engagement. Hosted by the Office of the Vice President for the Arts, Shuch will produce a campus-wide participatory project that uses clay and conversation to explore intimacy, memory, and connection in a time of social fragmentation.
Jeannie Simms produces photographs, videos, and objects in sites with border politics or rapidly changing geopolitical and economic situations, conjuring desires and fantasies from real people in settings of labour and migration. Hosted by the Department of Art & Art History as part of the Holt Visiting Artist Program, Simms will present an exhibition and teach a photography course to explore, reflect on, and be inspired by the color blue.
C Pam Zhang is the author of two novels, How Much of These Hills Is Gold and Land of Milk and Honey. She is the winner of the Academy of Arts and Letters Rosenthal Award, the Asian/Pacific Award for Literature, and the California Book Award. Hosted by the Creative Writing Program as part of the Stein Visiting Writer program, Zhang will teach Strange Encounters, a course that is both a fiction workshop and a deprogramming.
