MA Artists’ Film & Moving Image

The MA Artists’ Film & Moving Image is a twelve-month, practice-based programme for artists and filmmakers working across the field of artists’ moving image. Based in London and closely connected to leading research centres, galleries, and film festivals, the course offers an exceptional opportunity to develop ambitious work in a rigorous, critically engaged environment.

You will work closely with Goldsmiths’ expert faculty and visiting lecturers within a small, supportive cohort. The programme is recognised for cultivating distinctive artistic voices and encouraging experimental approaches that are showcased in ambitious final degree exhibitions. Teaching combines one-to-one tutorials, lectures, seminars, and workshops that explore the histories, contexts, and futures of artists’ moving image.

Professional practice & networks
Professional practice is embedded throughout the programme. You will be introduced to curators, film festival programmers, and organisations central to contemporary moving-image culture, including partnerships and events with London’s major institutions, artist-run spaces, and international festivals. These engagements provide valuable networking opportunities and direct insight into the professional, curatorial, and production contexts in which artists’ moving image is produced, exhibited, and distributed.

Guest Tutors
Each year, you will be invited to propose and work with guest tutors whose practices align with your own research interests. This collaborative approach enables participants to engage directly with artists, filmmakers, and curators shaping the field today. Recent guests have included Alia Syed, Lydia Ourahmane, Jessica Sarah Rinland, Julia Parks, Murat Adash, Nina Davies, Onyeka Igwe, Jala Wahid, R.I.P. Germain, Myrid Carten, Ben Rivers, and Sohrab Hura, amongst many others. Their contributions bring professional insight, critical dialogue, and diverse perspectives that will enrich your learning experience.

Facilities
You will have access to Goldsmiths’ exceptional production resources, including dedicated moving-image equipment and studio space, as well as access to state-of-the-art workshops and labs with expert tutors to help you realise your projects. Production facilities range from Graphics & Time-Based Media and 3D printing to Ceramics, Woodwork, Metal and Casting, Fine Art Print, Constructed Textiles, Photography and Moving Image Capture, and Sound.

Graduate achievements
Graduates from the MA continue to shape the international field of artists’ film and moving image. Recent highlights include premieres at IDFA, Locarno, and the International Film Festival Rotterdam; exhibitions at the Fukuoka Art Museum and Sharjah Biennial; and selections for Bloomberg New Contemporaries and Visions du Réel. Their work spans moving image and sound installation, performance, cinema, curating, and publishing, reflecting the programme’s breadth and ambition.
