Deutsche Bank has named Lucia Tallová its “Artist of the Year” 2026. On this occasion, the PalaisPopulaire in Berlin is presenting the first institutional solo exhibition in Germany by the Slovak artist, born in 1985.
Lucia Tallová works at the intersection of painting, collage, assemblage, and sculpture. Her scenographically conceived, often room-filling installations resemble surreal tableaux. They explore memory, ideology, art history, climate, and the legacy of modernism. Tallová works exclusively with analogue media such as paper and photography.
The title of Tallová's exhibition, Moving Clouds, evokes clouds that ceaselessly drift across the sky, embodying the constant cycle of creation and decay. In her work, “moving” also refers to an emotional, inner movement: being touched by the world, by its breathtaking beauty as well as by its boundless destruction and exploitation. In this context, she simultaneously addresses another cycle: the eternally repeating rise and fall of male-dominated civilizations, cultures, and power structures. Tallová's works reflect on various levels the socialist past and the collapse of the Eastern Bloc, which she experienced in its aftermath as a child and teenager.
Lucia Tallová was nominated by Sam Bardaouil and Till Fellrath, directors of the Hamburger Bahnhof – Nationalgalerie der Gegenwart – Berlin and founders of the curatorial platform Art Reoriented.
Since 2010, Deutsche Bank has been honoring artists every year, offering a platform for new positions in contemporary art. The “Artist of the Year” award focuses on promising artists who have already produced artistically and socially significant works that align with the two focal points of the Deutsche Bank Collection: works on paper and photography.
Moving Clouds, is Tallová’s first institutional solo exhibition in Europe, curated by Britta Faerber, Global Head of Deutsche Bank Art &Culture, and on view at PalaisPopulaire in Berlin from September 10, 2026. Open House September 9, 2026 from 7–10pm.
