What are the most critical questions for architects to pose now? Contrary to the ongoing mainstream fixation on agendas such as sustainability, ecology, architects’ identities, problem-solving, social engagement, adaptive reuse, and the ever-growing assault on form, authorship, artistry, and alternative views, curator Vladimir Belogolovsky focuses our attention on architecture itself. Seven international architects present one project each: an iconic railway station in Bangladesh, giant panda pavilions in China, an underground art museum in Poland, a proposal for an art center in Finland, a tourist retreat in Vietnam, a redevelopment of a hospital complex in Switzerland, and a laconic villa for a winery owner in Armenia. Instead of identifying these projects’ common ground, the curator directs some of the most fundamental questions to the participating architects individually: What is your architecture about? Where do you look for inspiration? How do you start a project? These and other inquiries form the basis for Out of ConText, a platform for discussing diverse ideas and an open-ended critique of our discipline’s current moment, in which we no longer feel it is appropriate to share dreams and aspirations, and the immediacy of the most pragmatic issues undermines our creativity, imagination, and ambitions.
Out of ConText invites WAF delegates to join this debate by sharing their unique ideas—contextual and personal, consequential and random, rational and intuitive, pragmatic and philosophical, calculated and emotional, aligned and contradictory, and as diverse as we are. During the course of the exhibition, visitors are encouraged to take part in live-recorded interviews conducted by the curator within the installation. How do you see the role of an architect? What kind of architecture brings you joy? Why does architecture matter?
