Feel Me, Hear Me – Echoes from the Metropole is a collaboration between Extra Extra and Performa: twelve walks through New York City during the 2025 Performa Biennial, guided by some of the most daring voices of today. Drawing from Performa’s rich archive and Extra Extra's sensual spirit, these imaginative walks invite you to experience the city through an intimate, sensory lens of body and place—from SoHo and Tribeca to Harlem, Brooklyn and the East Village.
Celebrating Performa's 20th anniversary, Feel Me, Hear Me features McKenzie Wark, Christian Nyampeta, Emmanuel Iduma, Gabriel Fontana, Defne Ayas and RoseLee Goldberg, Nina Folkersma, Raimundas Malašauskas, Andrius Arutiunian, Nadine Botha, Adam Kleinman and Andros Zins-Browne, Gabriel Lester, Tavia Nyong'o, and Willem de Rooij. Feel Me, Hear Me is curated by Defne Ayas, Senior Curator-at-Large, Performa, and Director, Van Abbemuseum in Eindhoven, and Samira Benlaloua, Artistic Director, Extra Extra.
The guided walks bring together Extra Extra's exploration of sensual storytelling and the intimacies of the urban, and Performa's commitment to performance as a civic and poetic language. Both treat walking as an artistic and political act, one that fosters connection, contemplation, and care within the chaos of the city and the world we inhabit.
A harbinger of hope for an unexpected future of the metropole, these walks map the city’s iconic performance landmarks, while tracing the emotional and sensory textures of contemporary life. Sensuality is the heartbeat of these civic and curatorial crossings. To walk sensually is to engage the city as co-conspirator: to register the musk after rain on a bridge, the bassline leaking from a basement club, the overheard confession of strangers mid-desire. In walking with us, we welcome you to encounter the metropole, and ourselves, not as spectators, but as participants in its ongoing performance of urban life for the rhythm underfoot to recalibrate our sense of time, risk, and relation.

About Performa
Founded in 2004 by art historian and curator RoseLee Goldberg, Performa has expanded the possibilities for visual artists working in performance, providing essential curatorial and production support, and, with its dedicated biennial, providing a worldwide platform for performance of the 21st century. Performa Commissions have changed the possibilities of the form, and its educational programs have shown its rich history as an integral part of artistic practice, reaching back through the centuries to the Renaissance. This visionary organization has entirely transformed every art institution’s approach to visual art performance, now a staple in art museums and galleries throughout the world. Since 2005, Performa has presented ten editions of its three-week international Performa Biennial that have animated New York City every other year.
