Phileas—The Austrian Office for Contemporary Art supports artists, curators, galleries and institutions in Austria and works to strengthen their presence on the international landscape of contemporary art. Over the past 10 years, Phileas has collaborated with more than 88 international biennials and institutions to support more than 136 exhibitions across the world.
In 2026, Phileas will collaborate with the following artists and institutions:

Florentina Holzinger will represent Austria at the 61st Biennale di Venezia in 2026. Curated by Nora-Swantje Almes, Holzinger’s project—under the working title SeaWorld Venice—explores feminist themes and evolving representations of female corporeality, drawing on mythological water creatures to imagine new futures for Venice. Phileas and our initiated Friends of the Austrian Pavilion are supporting Holzinger and her team in their artistic vision, alongside core funding from the Austrian Ministry of Culture.
Birke Gorm will represent Austria at the 16th Gwangju Biennale 2026 in South Korea. Curated by Attilia Fattori Franchini under the title the evening and the morning and the night, Gorm’s project will transform the exhibition space of the Austrian Pavilion, both physically and conceptually, into an attic—a place used for storage, mainly left undisturbed. The Austrian Pavilion is commissioned by Phileas and co-financed by the Austrian Ministry of Culture with additional support from the Austrian Foreign Ministry.

Phileas runs a year-round Visitor Programme that invites international curators, art critics and museum groups to Austria to visit artists’ studios, galleries, artist-run spaces, museums and foundations. We organise annual curatorial exchanges with our international partners. A group of Austria-based curators travel to the partner country, and Phileas hosts a group of curators for a reciprocal visit to Austria. Past collaborators include the Office for Contemporary Art Norway (OCA); Trampoline, France; and Mondriaan Fonds, Netherlands. In 2026, we are collaborating with Catapulta, Spain.
Phileas produces an annual series of publications entitled First Monographs, which provide the first comprehensive overview of the work of an Austrian or Austria-based artist, introducing them to an international audience. Following artists Sophie Thun (2022), Christian Kosmas Mayer (2023), Birke Gorm (2024) and Toni Schmale (2025), our next First Monograph will present the work of artist Till Megerle.
Our Art Writing Programme supports and promotes writing and broadcasting about art through funded workshops, lectures and discussions with experts. Providing a platform and training for a new generation of writers, it seeks to foreground Austria's contemporary art scene. In 2026, we will once again be collaborating with the Frieze New Writers programme, among others.
