Starting from the observation that the “East” increasingly serves as a cultural, aesthetic, and political projection surface, the multipart exhibition, discourse, and publication project Projections Onto the East addresses the ideological attributions associated with the terms “East” and “West.”
International artists, scholars, and writers examine historical and contemporary lines of conflict—from GDR memory politics and antisemitism to postsocialist transformations and current geopolitical tensions. Central to the project is the question of how the dichotomy of “East” and “West” structures our present.
Accompanying two exhibitions at n.b.k. and the Schinkel Pavillon, a publication and a project website bring together artistic positions, research perspectives, and contributions to the discourse. An extensive discourse program delves deeper into these thematic questions.

Neuer Berliner Kunstverein (n.b.k.) presents the first exhibition of Berlin-based director and writer Christoph Hochhäusler (b. 1972 in Munich). His award-winning work unites aesthetic, social, and political concerns in a singular cinematic vision. His new short film Das Paradies vertreibt uns (2026) weaves photographs from the 1950s and 1960s, which he found at a Berlin flea market, into a narrative. The exhibition also presents documents and materials related to Hochhäusler’s earlier and recent work, including storyboards, on-set photographs, film posters, and issues of the film magazine Revolver (since 1998), which he co-founded. Together, they offer a window into the work of an uncompromising filmmaker.
Accompanying the presentation in the n.b.k. Showroom, a retrospective will be held at Kino Arsenal from September 3 to 24, 2026, with talks and introdcutions by Esther Buss, Matthias Dell, Christoph Hochhäusler, Birgit Kohler, Jan Künemund, Anne Küper, Sebastian Markt.

Guerrilla Girls

For its 2026–2027 facade project, Neuer Berliner Kunstverein (n.b.k.) will present a new specially commissioned work by the acclaimed collective Guerrilla Girls. For over 40 years, the Guerrilla Girls have operated inside and outside institutional contexts, exposing inequalities around gender and race in the international art world and beyond. Their use of provocative slogans and visually striking poster campaigns has become their trademark. Their anonymous presence—the members of the collective always wear gorilla masks—is a radical act in an art world fueled by ego and fame. As questions about the relationship between art and activism are debated with fresh urgency, this is an opportune moment to revisit the Guerrilla Girls’ pioneering practice.

Dora Budor and Noah Barker’s new video, Monte Carlo Method (2026) premieres in November 2026 at the n.b.k. The video departs from a mathematical model used to estimate possible outcomes of uncertain events. Originating in the Manhattan Project and central to financial forecasting, the method structures the film examining a city and century built on chance. The video is supplemented by a billboard commission located at the intersection of Friedrichstrasse and Torstrasse, just steps from Neuer Berliner Kunstverein (n.b.k.).
