55 Anual de Arte FAAP

The Museu de Arte Brasileira of FAAP (MAB FAAP) opened the 55 Anual de Arte FAAP (55th Annual Art) exhibition on November 24, one of the most traditional collective shows within São Paulo’s contemporary art circuit. This year’s edition features 38 works by 34 students from the University Center, showing a wide range of artistic languages, media, and supports.  

Created in 1964, the Annual has spent more than six decades encouraging artistic production and fostering contemporary cultural reflection among students. The open call welcomes submissions from all FAAP students, and this year’s selection emerged from 135 entries, evaluated by a committee composed of professors Lívia Aquino, Luana Fortes, Luciara Ribeiro, and Marcos Moraes, Director of MAB FAAP. 

The selection criteria emphasized research depth, experimentation, conceptual and visual innovation, as well as each student’s engagement with their creative process. 

This edition also features works by guest artists Gabriel Torggler and Marina Hachem, both participants of the Residência Artística FAAP – Paris. Each semester, the program selects one awardee, among students, alumni, or faculty, to occupy Studio 1422 at the Cité Internationale des Arts, an international residency center, located along the River Seine, with which FAAP has maintained a partnership since 1997. The inclusion of a special room dedicated to guest artists creates a space for exchanges between creators already established in the art system and emerging artists who are still in training and seeking to enter that same field. 

Reinforcing its role as a space for dialogue, the Annual promotes meetings with the Selection and Award Committees and, at the end of the exhibition, hosts a conversation with the guest artists, along with the launch of the virtual catalogue documenting the show. These encounters aim to deepen reflective exchanges on the artistic experiments and practices that shape the students’ learning process, made visible in the exhibition itself. For the Foundation, the main goal of the Annual is to encourage students’ artistic production while fostering a space for debate and new perspectives on art through education, expanding this field of experience beyond academic boundaries and reconnecting it with a broad and diverse public. 

According to Marcos Moraes, the Annual reinforces art’s educational and cultural role:  “Art is an educational tool. Its visibility beyond the classroom broadens dialogue and encourages reflection. The works presented in the Annual highlight the potential of these young artists, who express contemporary concerns through the lens of their generation.” He also underscores the show’s historical relevance: “The Annual has become a significant reference in the field of contemporary visual arts. It encompasses exhibition design, catalog production and museum practices. Many artists who now exhibit in major galleries were first discovered here.”  

For the Visual Arts program, the Annual is a traditional platform for showcasing student production, completing a cycle of training, creation and dissemination, which fundamentally includes investigation and experimentation. 

Over the decades, the Annual has introduced the work of now-renowned artists such as Ana Mazzei, Anaísa Franco, André Komatsu, Chiara Banfi, Flávia Junqueira, Graziela Kunsch, Guilherme Peters, Leticia Ramos, Lia Chaia, Marcela Tiboni, Marcelo Cidade, Marcius Galan, Mariana Palma, Marina Rheingantz, Maurício Ianês, Mauro Piva, Paula Garcia, Rafael Assef, Regina Parra, Renata Haar, Rodolpho Parigi and Rodrigo Sassi, among many others.

About MAB FAAP
Since its opening in August 1961, in the building designed by Auguste Perret (1947), MAB FAAP has been dedicated to promoting and disseminating Brazilian art. Its collection includes over 3,500 works dating from the late 19th century onward. 

Throughout its history, the museum has hosted landmark exhibitions such as Proposta 65 and The Object in Art: Brazil in the 1960s. 

In recent years, it has presented major exhibitions such as “Desafio Salvador Dalí – Uma exposição surreal na FAAP” (2024); “Ancestral: Afro-Américas [Estados Unidos e Brasil]” (2024); “Andy Warhol: Pop Art!” (2025); and the current show “20 anos da Residência Artística FAAP—São Paulo: contribuições para uma coleção de arte contemporânea”, which celebrates two decades of one of the country’s most enduring residency programs, featuring 91 artists and 135 works from the MAB’s collection. It also hosted the 2025 Res Artis Conference—São Paulo, the world’s largest event dedicated to artist residencies and, for the first time, held in Latin America.
