The George Economou Collection is delighted to announce its winter program of curated conversations. The program provides a historical and cultural context to the exhibitions and fosters a critical discourse on art and culture.
On the occasion of the current exhibition Charline von Heyl: The Giddy Road to Ruin, the public program of conversations features a panel discussion on the legacy of Martin Kippenberger, whose anarchic spirit in painting has been an inspiration for von Heyl.
Other highlights include a talk on painting by art critic and theorist Isabelle Graw and a conversation on expanded painting and radical approaches to the medium with Hendrik Bündge, curator at Staatsgalerie Stuttgart.

A panel discussion with Diedrich Diederichsen, Béatrice Gross, Martin Prinzhorn, Annette Simons and Johannes Wohnseifer
The panel brings together Diedrich Diederichsen, author and cultural theorist; Béatrice Gross, art historian; Martin Prinzhorn, author, linguist and academic; musician Annette Simons, who collaborated with Kippenberger; and Johannes Wohnseifer, artist working across different media, Kippenberger’s assistant in the 1990s.
When painting guides the painter’s hand—between myth and reality: Saturday, March 7, 2026 at 7pm
A talk by Isabelle Graw on the existential dimension of painting beyond the limits of the market, followed by a conversation with Vassilios Doupas, curator of the public program.
From painting an Egg to painting the World: Expanded Painting in the Work of Katharina Grosse and Other Artists: Saturday, March 14, 2026 at 7pm
A conversation with Hendrik Bündge, curator of modern and contemporary art at the Staatsgalerie Stuttgart and curator of the recent exhibition Katharina Grosse: The Sprayed Dear (2025–2026), on expanded painting and radical approaches to the medium.
The conversation series is curated by Vassilios Doupas in collaboration with Skarlet Smatana, director of the George Economou Collection.

Publication
Every year, this series of curated conversations culminates in a publication.
Conversations Vol. II, conceived in response to Dana Schultz: The Island and featuring contributions by Martin Gayford and Alison M. Gingeras, will be available at the end of March.
Conversations Vol. II explores the concept of the artist’s studio as a pivotal locus of artistic production and of identity formation. it also explores feminist approaches to curating, on the occasion of Gingeras’s transhistorical exhibition The Woman Question: 1550–2025.

Note to editors
Hendrik Bündge–modern and contemporary art curator at Staatsgalerie Stuttgart. Previously he was curator and deputy artistic director at Staatliche Kunsthalle Baden-Baden.
Diedrich Diederichsen—author, academic and cultural critic, whose writing is at the intersection of art, politics, and pop culture.
Isabelle Graw—academic, art theorist, co-founder and editor of Texte zur Kunst. Her books include High Price (2009), The Love of Painting (2017), On The Benefits of Friendship (2022) and Fear and Money (2024).
Béatrice Gross—independent curator and art critic. She has organized exhibitions at Dia Art Foundation, Centre Pompidou-Metz, and M-Museum, Leuven.
Martin Prinzhorn—professor of Linguistics at the University of Vienna, author of numerous essays on Kippenberger.
Annette Simons—musician and graphic designer. She is a member of the punk band Bärchen und die Milchbubis and collaborated with Martin Kippenberger in the 1980s.
Johannes Wohnseifer—artist exhibiting widely in Europe and the US. Exhibitions include: Museum Ludwig, Kunstverein Wuppertal, Sprengel Museum. He is professor at the Academy of Media Arts, Cologne and was assistant to Martin Kippenberger in the 1990s.
Vassilios Doupas—curator of the public program at The George Economou Collection. Formerly, he was the deputy director at Art Newspaper Greece. He lectures regularly in curating. Among others, he has organized the 2019 Frieze Curatorial Summit and a Contemporary Art Society conference on the new museum canon, in collaboration with the Courtauld Institute of Art.
