The Art Gallery of Burlington (AGB) welcomes Wiigwasitig / waskway / Honouring the Birch Tree, open September 12, 2026, to January 3, 2027. Curated by Albany Sutherland, the exhibition features the work of Pat Bruderer (Halfmoon Woman), Helen Pelletier, Amber Sandy, Seth Arcand, and the late Angelique Merasty, whose practices reflect intergenerational knowledge and healing through birch bark (Wiigwas/waskway).
Coming from Anishinaabeg and nêhiyawak communities over several generations, the exhibition features bark biting, baskets, film, photography, and wearable art. Angelique Merasty, among the few birch bark biters of her generation, preserved this practice during a period when it risked being lost entirely. This legacy continues through Pat Bruderer, who creates intricate designs by biting thin layers of bark, and teaches youth across the region.
Helen Pelletier, informed by the sacred mountain Anemki Wajiw on Fort William First Nation, carries Anishinaabe knowledge forward. Amber Sandy, mentored by Pelletier, reflects intergenerational knowledge sharing through hide tanning, harvesting quills and Wiigwas. Seth Arcand's film and photography explores interactions with waskway, extending this work through his role as Mentor-in-Residence, where he will lead a five-day intensive centred on visiting through film. These artists revitalize Indigenous knowledge systems by sharing stories with future generations through making.
