The Multispecies Spaces Lab (MSS Lab) is a new continuing education programme developed with the Institute Art Gender Nature (IAGN) of the Basel Academy of Art and Design FHNW (HGK Basel). It brings together practitioners from art, architecture, and beyond for an intensive week of hands-on experimentation, expert exchange, and collaborative making.
On Tuesday, March 31, 2026, on 1pm (CET) an online information event will be held on the Multispecies Spaces Lab for all those interested in the programme (register here).
Developed in collaboration with Chrissie Muhr, Architect, Researcher and Curator as well as Co-director and Artistic Director of Experimental in Berlin, and the Institute Art Gender Nature (IAGN) at the Basel Academy of Art and Design FHNW, the Multispecies Spaces Lab will take place from August 24–30, 2026, ending with a public programme and engagement during Kunsttage Basel 2026.
Over the course of the intensive programme, participants engage in hands-on experiments addressing material resources, forms of cohabitation, and interspecies environments, supported by close mentorship from leading practitioners and specialists from research and industry. The programme is structured as a dynamic mix of expert inputs, workshops, and field trips—creating conditions for genuine discovery and cross-disciplinary exchange.
Under the direction of Chrissie Muhr and Chus Martínez, Head of the Institute Art Gender Nature (IAGN) at HGK Basel, the first edition welcomes: Landscape Architect Céline Baumann (Basel), Architect Justine Bell (Copenhagen), Lucia Pietroiusti (Hartwig Foundation, Amsterdam), Curator and Writer Filipa Ramos (Paris and London), and Yuri Tuma (Institute for Postnatural Studies, Madrid).
The MSS Lab asks how spaces can be designed for humans and non-humans together. Working with new materials, technologies, and methods, participants develop tangible prototypes—and share them with a wider public at the end of the week through exhibitions, presentations, and open experiments during Kunsttage Basel 2026.
Admission: The MSS Lab is open to all curious and innovative practitioners from all the different fields, from architecture, art, design, urban planning, engineering, ecology, the sciences, and interdisciplinary fields. No institutional affiliation is required. Openness to experimental and collaborative work is essential; artistic or technical experience is an advantage.
