Gen Z. All at Once

The exhibition Gen Z. All at Once at MO Museum (curator Michal Novotný, co-curator Marius Armonas) brings together twenty artists, born between 1993 and 2001, who live and work across eleven countries in Eastern and Central Europe. 

Generation Z—now largely in their twenties—has come of age amid profound transformations: the expansion of digital technologies, the climate crisis, the changes of work and identity, and the renewed reality of armed conflict.

The entanglement of virtual and physical realities has produced an experience in which formerly separate spheres blend and overlap seamlessly. Public and private, intimacy and exposure, production and leisure coexist simultaneously—just as feelings of fear, anxiety, excitement, empathy, and pleasure do. Generation Z has grown up within this permeability. For them, contradiction is not a problem to be resolved, but a structural condition. It is no longer yes or no, but of both.

In line with their global generation is an intensified attention to corporeality and vulnerability, fluid strategies of identity formation, an emphasis on care and community—human and more-than-human—and a search for spaces of collective safety.

Engagement with digital imagery is self-evident, shaping modes of production, perception, and self-staging. Moving between roles, profiles, and personas—at once singular and multiple—these artists sustain tensions rather than dissolve them: between visibility and intimacy protection, exposure and privacy, global crisis and everyday life.

Rather than constructing a single narrative or thematic structure, the exhibition functions as a survey, allowing visitors to recognize recurring attitudes emerging from the diversity of artistic approaches. Thus, the setting is a city-like landscape where individual artists reside.

The ambition of this exhibition is to bridge widening generational divides in a time of accelerated change. It seeks to bring the perspectives of the youngest generation into closer dialogue with broader audiences. It also reminds us that the world in which they now search for their voice was largely shaped by those who came before them.
