Galeria Municipal do Porto (GMP) unveils its autumn and winter programme, comprising three exhibitions alongside a public programme including live performances, a study programme, talks and listening sessions.
New exhibition cycle in November
The season begins with the final weeks of the summer exhibitions. Physical Culture: Porto Edition, by Augustas Serapinas, and the installation Sharing, by Pia Camil, are on view until 18 October, while Lydia Ourahmane’s For Voice can be visited until 25 October. On 11 November, GMP opens three new exhibitions.
Leonor Parda’s debut institutional exhibition, Nightwood, borrows its title from Djuna Barnes' novel and brings together a group of new works. Combining sculpture, video and sound, Parda reconfigures found objects and assorted materials, from steel and concrete to resins and textiles, echoing the copy-paste logic of the internet through paradoxical physical interventions.
Basel Abbas and Ruanne Abou-Rahme present To rupture a sky with no sun, one of their largest exhibitions to date. Based between Ramallah and New York, the duo work with images, objects, sound and text to tell stories through audiovisual installations and performances. Over nearly two decades, their practice has employed Palestine as a point of departure, both for reflecting on a present marked by crises and disasters and for projecting scenarios of near futures.
Gothic Tale is Isabel Carvalho’s first mid-career survey exhibition, marking a critical moment in the artist’s practice. With a career spanning over twenty-five years, Carvalho’s work brings together many dimensions of visual art, literature and public life, from independent book publishing to writing, drawing, painting, sculpture, performance and music.
Public programmes across the season
The fifth edition of Fogo Fátuo, an event dedicated to art in motion and a meeting space for different media, geographies and traditions, takes place on 31 October. In each edition, GMP offers a dynamic programme that encompasses intimate acoustic performances and immersive audiovisual experiences, showcasing the breadth and richness of performative, sound-based and other live artistic practices.
In the second half of November, Colectivos Pláka, a study programme on contemporary culture and society, presents the second course of its 2026 edition, coordinated by Basel Abbas and Ruanne Abou-Rahme. Through an interdisciplinary practice spanning image, sound, text, installation and performance, the duo develops research-based processes that explore the relationships between performativity, political imaginaries, the body and virtuality, proposing alternative ways of understanding and re-imagining the present.
The monthly Gallery Talks continue, hosting leading figures of contemporary thought for informal dialogue around the relationship between art and society. The season features columnist and political analyst José Pacheco Pereira, founder of the private library Ephemera, moderated by photographer and curator Manuela Matos Monteiro, and actress and performer Isabél Zuaa, moderated by architect and curator Alexandra Balona, alongside a Gallery Talk for children with artist Luísa Abreu.
Fonoteca Municipal do Porto presents Disposophonia: Phonograms, Archives and Collecting, a new three-session programme running from September to November, that brings together the Fonoteca’s archive and Sonoscopia, an independent institution focused on experimental, improvised and electroacoustic music and sound. Through Fonoteca’s record collection, the programme balances preservation and experimentation, proposing new ways of listening to, manipulating and thinking on sound heritage, while exploring vinyl both as a memory archive and as raw material for new sonic exploration.
Rush Hour, Fonoteca’s thematic public listening sessions, continues every Wednesday, while the monthly Active Listening invites rapper and politician Eva Cruzeiro, filmmaker and artist Tânia Dinis, and Becas Xavier, longtime manager of Porto’s Aniki Bobó and Passos Manuel – two landmarks of the city's cultural life. Each guest selects a record from the extensive vinyl collection and shares it with the audience in an intimate listening experience.
Fonoteca’s activities operate in close dialogue with the Galeria’s programme, strengthening connections between projects, artists and audiences.
