On July 2, the creative legacy of Nijolė Šivickas de Mockus will be presented to the public for the first time at the Vytautas Kasiulis Art Museum. The collection arrived in Lithuania from Colombia last year.
Born in Kėdainiai, the sculptor and ceramic artist fled to Germany during World War II, studied at the Stuttgart State Academy of Art and Design, and later settled in South America, where she developed her distinctive artistic style. Her work was profoundly influenced by pre-Columbian artistic traditions. Working primarily with clay, she created sculptures, objects, and installations that combined archaic forms with a modern artistic language.
Over time, her work gradually moved away from Expressionism and increasingly embraced abstraction, while her continuous experimentation with materials revealed a remarkable creative sensitivity.
In 2024, the Museum of Modern Art of Bogotá (MAMBO) hosted a major retrospective exhibition of the artist’s work, presenting a reconstruction of her studio. This year, Lithuanian audiences will have the opportunity to discover these works.
The return of this artistic legacy has also been supported by the community of friends of the Lithuanian National Museum of Art. Anyone interested in becoming part of the museum’s initiatives and future cultural discoveries is welcome to join this community.
