MA Fine Art Online is an innovative two-year, part-time programme committed to decentring and widening participation in art education. Since we launched in 2021, we’ve welcomed over 250 students to our international community of practice. One of these artists wrote recently about how she felt “part of something thoughtful, generous and alive”. The generosity she describes is down to our team of artist academics, whose research enriches and enlivens our students’ experience.
Sustainable renewal
Dr Jo Griffin leads our summer module, Sustainable Strategies. Her interdisciplinary research has led her to hunt submarines in Scottish lochs and explore stories of lost spacecraft through a Fellowship at the NASA Space Science Lab, Berkeley, California.
Dr Robyn Cook is Associate Professor of Design Ecologies and teaches on Sustainable Strategies. Her work examines how design is entangled with the mesh of systemic power, investigating how language, economics and technology enforce forms of domination.
Jo and Robyn work closely with Flora Bowden, whose PhD research at the Royal College of Art is informed by the visual language of deep time, and Luke Dowd, a painter who has also taught at The Ruskin School of Art, Oxford University and Goldsmiths College.
Collaboration
Evan Ifekoya leads our Collaborative Practice module and collaboration is central to their practice, which brings people together through shared listening, movement and reflection. Recent projects such as the exhibition The Archive is an Altar use epistolary address, sonic ritual and embodied performance to engage ancestral lineages.
Maria Christoforidou also works collaboratively, most recently in The AfroSea Collective (with Libita Sibungu, Angeline Morrison, Caroline Deeds and Catherine Lucktaylor), supported by Exeter University and the Reimaginings Art Commission programme.
Dr Mary Anne Francis will this year publish a years-long collaboration with Claire Scanlon, using the Research Catalogue platform to realise a project that mines copyleft images to address complex relations between alchemies and extractivist capitalism.
Professional networks
Dr Kate Fahey, who leads our Final Major Project module, has been selected for This 26 at the Royal Scottish Academy in Edinburgh. In 2025, her exhibition beyond, beneath, Beside at Tea Houses Kilkenny explored this context on Ireland’s River Nore.
Supervisor Charlie Duck recently returned from a residency at Centro de las Artes de San Agustín, Oaxaca, Mexico, supported by CAST, Cornwall. He has also been selected for the 2026 Freelands Foundation Two Together residency at Porthmeor Studios, St Ives.
Art writing
Dr Lucy Sames is on the editorial board for Journal of Art & Writing (JAWS) and is currently working on her monograph Wet Rest, to be published by Punctum New York.
Georgia Metaxas’s recent publications include the photobook Mnemosyne Grove with Perimeter Editions, and Srin Surti this year published his essay ‘On Being an Artist, Educator and Researcher’ in AD magazine, issue #44.
Pedagogical innovation
Tutor Lucy Willow runs The Wandering School of Art and Course Leader Josie Cockram is developing pedagogical research for artists teaching online, supported by Falmouth’s Centre for Blended Realities and Centre for Pedagogy Futures, where she is a Research Affiliate and co-founded Decentring through Digitality.
